RIP Allen Toussaint
One of the best song writers you probably never heard of. Besides the myriad hits he wrote, he also gave The Meters their start, and influenced an entire musical sound. At least he went out with his boots on, so to speak...

I've always liked Bonnie Raitt's version of "What is Success".

Sad that he's gone but happy that he was still playing at 77. 'Working in the Coal Mine' was always been one of my favorites.

RIP indeed. As you said, one of the best song writers you probably never heard of. I hope he enjoyed the notoriety he did get. He certainly deserved it.
Thank you for sharing this.

Saw him perform in NewOrleans last spring at French Quarter Fest.
They gave him headliner status and he put on a great show. He made a point to talk about his long association with the Grateful Dead, and described himself as a Deadhead. He'll be missed. |

I spent all day listening to WWOZ. Simply unbelievable how many songs he wrote, from "Mother in Law" to "What Do You Want The Girl to Do?". And he could play jazz piano like crazy when he wanted to. A singular talent. He and Doc Pomus are sharing a laugh tonight, I hope.

Such an impact on the Nawlin's scene....RIP. Haven't been to Jazz Fest in years as it became too big and "corporate" for me.....Ziggy, how is/was FQF?

FQF is a blast. It's all free and they set up about 12 stages along the river and parks in the area. You can wander from stage to stage, and a new band comes on every hour or so. Everything from zydeco to jazz singers to big brass, and everything in between
It's also the best time to be in NO...perfect spring weather with no humidity.. It's getting more popular each year. Ziggy |
