I'm an idiot- installing insulation in June !!!!

Well like most jobs the completion of my man cave creeped up on me. To the point that the past two days I was installing reflective foil then ceiling insulation. Nothing makes you sweat like a pig quite like climbing in the rafters when it's 90 degrees out  I rented some 10 ' scaffolding which has made it much easier but I'm doing this alone. It took me two days to finish one half of the 24 x 26 garage ! Oh and when you sweat like a pig it's amazing how the 4 ' wide roll of reflective foils sticks to you like fly paper ! :D I got a quote just for labor of 1600.00 and I said no way I'll do it myself.........stubborn German :D . But the money saved can go in the Porsche fund. I had the mini-split set to 75 and at ground level it was wonderful.........in the rafters not so much. I'll be glad when this part of the build is done.

Well done.

It's important to replace body fluids (beer).

Man that sucks. I brought home about 40 2'x4' pink Owens Corning insulation batts for free back in March when I bought a bunch of 4'x8' plywood sheets from a store that was remodeling. I've used most of the plywood sheets, but all of the batts are still sitting in my bedroom waiting to go up into the 100 degree attic....I think i'll wait for fall.

Baz 06-14-2015 03:43 PM

Thinking about re-roofing my house. But it can wait until the winter... :)

Don't get dehydrated.

LakeCleElum 06-14-2015 05:19 PM

When I built this house, the bid to blow in insulation was less than I would pay for the material?

sc_rufctr 06-14-2015 05:52 PM

Well done... A long time ago I went up into the roof space to install a TV aerial.
Normally it would go on the roof but zoning restrictions in my area wouldn't allow that.

After some time and struggle somehow I managed to put my foot through the ceiling. lol
I can laugh about it now ;)

I'm doing tractor work on our property this weekend. 108F yesterday and 105F today. 9 hr and 12 hr days. I totally feel ya. Stubborn indeed!!! I drank 2.5 gallons of water today and it's still not over. Daylight still. So you have company in the stubborn dept.

Lots of sweaty work there.

Just a a point of fact, pigs don't sweat much at all. They wallow in the mud to cool off. They have few sweat glands and they don't help much to regulate temperature.

I sweat like a race horse or a whore in church pick your metaphor.

masraum 06-14-2015 07:27 PM

I did the same thing several years ago, either late May or early June in the attic of the house crawling around under and over the AC ducting and trying to avoid having my head and shoulders impaled by the thousands of nails that were protruding from the plywood by at least an 1" or more. Trying to get around the AC ducting made me feel like I was Catherine Zeta Jones in this scene.
http://www.duanandmichi.com/backdoor...pment_0025.jpg

I did the whole attic with R-25 over the top of the old rock wool that was already up there. I think the materials cost about $450, and we made that back in less than a year. It sucked, the attic temp was between 125° and 135°. I took numerous breaks for water and would put a cold wet towel on my head when I came down. It sucked, but it was worth it. I just wish I'd done it 15 years earlier.

an expression I've been using is "... like a Rottweiler's breakfast." Stupid, but that's the idea of it.

1990C4S 06-15-2015 03:50 AM

I just did nine pot lights. I hate working in the attic.

rfuerst911sc 06-15-2015 03:17 PM

I'll be back at it tomorrow taking the day off from work to start the other half of the garage. Going to finish it up on Thursday both days to be in the mid 90's ! Staying hydrated is key lots of water, Gatorade and ice tea is working for me. I have to return the scaffolding on Friday so full speed ahead !

KFC911 06-15-2015 05:24 PM

Yes, you're an idiot ;). I've been clearing around one of my ponds. It's only 96 and humid, but even "I" ain't going into an attic this time of year....at least I can stop and catch bass if I want to. An old farm pond...I probably was the last one to cast in it 20+ years ago...so guess what I'm doing tomorrow instead of toiling in a HOT attic , in JUNE, in GEORGIA...are you nuts :D?

rfuerst911sc 06-16-2015 02:25 AM

KC911 thanks for the inspiring speech :D I'm sitting here drinking coffee trying to get mentally prepared for the battle ahead........I will win........... !! Last night after work I had to move all the crap from the unfinished side of the garage over to the finished side including my center console boat. Scaffolding is up and ready to go. I'm a little bit smarter now having done one side so it should go a little bit quicker. For me the reflective foil is the worst to install, once that is done the fiberglass insulation is a piece of cake. At 7:00 the mini-split AC will be turned on and the work will begin. If I survive the day I'll be posting later :D

Just tryin' to help. I'd forgotten I'd taken my spinning rod out of the truck, so I spent the morning filling muskrat holes and hauling dirt....before I smashed my pinky pretty good and quit for lunch. I'd smash my other pinky before I'd climb into an attic today though. Off to other adventures....hope you're still with us SmileWavy

Just finished the same thing in my garage. I worked Saturday mornings from 7-8. Took me a lot longer, but it beats working in a sweat shop.

Bats are expensive.

rfuerst911sc 06-16-2015 03:47 PM

I survived another brutal day ! Put in a marathon session from 7:00 this morning to 6:00 this afternoon the hell with this hot weather :D. I had a better pace on the reflective foil and I'm more than 3/4 done. Back to work tomorrow then I'm taking Thursday off to complete the job. I can already feel a difference in the garage just with it 3/4 insulated. My plan is to return the scaffolding Thursday evening and be done with this portion of the build. I need to figure out what I want for a finished ceiling but I'm still leaning towards either tongue and groove pine 1/2 " thick or possibly some kind of metal. The T & G might give just a little bit more insulating affect plus noise absorbtion. Even had the wife out there helping for a little bit. Tomorrow we celebrate 37 years of marriage ! It's all good SmileWavy

johnco 06-16-2015 04:15 PM

you can come finish my job.. doing a torch down flat roof and then shingles on the peak. good to about 10am then it rains for an hour or two. then after noon it's too damn hot and humid to breath

And I mean that....it was HOT today...

kach22i 06-16-2015 06:47 PM

I was doing attic work last summer, you have my sympathy.

The Tyvek outfit I was wearing made for a fine sweatsuit, the gloves, respirator and googles completed the misery.

You don't feel dizzy after a so much time in the heat?

Sounds like it might be unhealthy...

Nope........I've always had a high tolerance for heat. I remember when I built my 914/6 I was mig welding the fender flares outside in Orlando Florida in July !. And it was on the sunny side of the house........with a one piece mechanics suit, welding gloves and welding helmet. It's only sweat :D Compared to that this attic insulation is a piece of cake. SmileWavy

rfuerst911sc 06-18-2015 01:01 PM

Victory is mine ! ;) Started again at 7:00 this morning and stapled the last piece of insulation at 1:00 . I then broke down the scaffolding and returned it to Home Depot. So the " pro's " wanted 1600.00 to staple up the reflective foil and insulation that I already purchased. The one week of scaffold rental cost 117.00, add to that a bunch of T50 staples and that's it. I feel good about the savings and I know I took care to do everything right. Heat be damned :D . There is no doubt I can feel a major difference in the garage and I'm experimenting with the AC settings. When I'm not using the garage I'm starting with a 80 degree setting. If that is too high I'll continue to bump it down one degree at a time. I'm thinking the removal of humidity will be a great help and when I want to work in the garage I knock it down to 74 it won't take long for the mini-split to achieve that temp. I am very happy..........and glad that nasty job is done ! Now I just need to figure out a ceiling. SmileWavy

Awesome! Did ya know that the best way to figure out a ceiling is sitting in a boat with a fishin' rod in your hand :D? Tell you wife you read it on the Internet....must be true!!!

rfuerst911sc 06-18-2015 04:21 PM

KC911 one of my projects is a 17 ' center console. All I have left is to hook up the gauges and she's good to go. I may do that on Sunday I want to get her in the water over the 4th of July holiday if I can.

johnsjmc 06-19-2015 06:47 AM

Hate to say it now But since you are putting up a ceiling anyway I would have installed the ceiling with vapour barrier/reflective layer above and then had blown in insulation put in on the top of the ceiling. Then you are only heating/cooling the garage and not the attic. I had R30 fiberglass blown in in Florida last year for $.30 a sq ft. I thought originally you were finishing /insulating the roof line to achieve a lofted ceiling effect ? ?

No sir not going for a loft look. I stapled reflective foil to the bottom of the top of the rafters, up where the roof deck is nailed to the top of the trusses. So that creates an air barrier if 3.5 " because my rafters are made of 2 x 4's . Then there is the bottom of the trusses, this is where I stapled R13 Kraft face 3.5 " fiberglass batts. I did this because it gives me an instant part time ceiling while I figure out what I actually want for the permanent ceiling. Once the permanent ceiling is in place then I will blow in fiberglass insulation to almost completely fill the space from the batt insulation to the bottom of the reflective foil. I'll end up with around R40 + which should be fine for Georgia. I just walked out to the garage it is almost 90 out right now. I have the mini-split set at 79 degrees and it feels great in there.

johnsjmc 06-19-2015 03:41 PM

I also have an old 17 ft boston whaler Montauk center console boat(1986 hull) I just repainted it (someone painted it before so repaint was easier). and repowered it with a 2013 90 hp Evinrude etec.
