Corral Fencing

My sister needs a bunch of fencing done for her and the kids horses. Advantages of wood over metal fence posts? Anyone use a air powered post pounder (for metal posts).

I know the basics, posts in ground, stretch wire, attach to posts, repeat till done.

Electrobraid.com

Easy to build. Safer than wire. I know two people that have had their horse die getting tangled up in wire fencing.

And it's made in Canada. I believe you can use wood or metal posts. I used wood. I think it looks better and harder to push over than T-posts.

Rent a tractor mounted 6" hole auger and place treated 4" round wood posts 3' deep with half a bag of quicrete poured in dry, add a gallon of water and tamp down with a stick. Fill the hole on up with dirt after the concrete sets. Use whatever fence you want between the posts but wire can be dangerous, and an electric fence will make the horsse fence shy (no leaning over to feed them or give them a neck scritch). We were given about 1000 feet of dog kennel 4' tall chain link fencing and top rail for our pastures. It's definately not ideal and can bend easily, but you can't beat the price.

In 2003/4 I built over a mile of wooden fence, three rail, with a friend of mine and my wife and kids.

I looked a a number of different options before I decided to go with all wood.

Vinyl Horse Fence - Sample Kit - Vinyl Fencing - Horse Fence & Privacy Fence - USA Vinyl Fence Company

Electric Fencing for Horses - Premier1Supplies

Cost became the overriding factor. There had been a few hurricanes through this area and all the local Amish saw mills had incredible deals on 1x6x16 oak boards. As mentioned by CKelly, go with pressure treated posts as described.

Good luck. My fences still look good although they will need additional work and stain next spring.

Fencing for Horses

We have used ElectroBraid for about 20 years. I like it because you do it once and you're done.

As above, I used an auger and 4x4 8' pressure treated posts, spaced them 50'.
The Electrobraid folks recommend four strands of wire rope: top, second down and the bottom are "live" and the one above the bottom is ground. We used only three as our horses are not "jumpers" and even the miniature donkeys respect it.
It will streatch in heavy snow but will tighten back up on its own. If not a few minutes with a come along and a couple of wrenches and you're done. (Don't forget to unplug the energizer! You won't forget a second time.)
Grounds are of paramount importance, about every 500 feet.
There is lots of help on the website regarding setting up their product and they even throw in a tester.

I'm not affilliated with the ElectroBraid folks, but I certainly recommend their product.
Mostly because I grew up on a farm and fenced every spring for over thirty years before switching to the braid.

Best
Les

I bought a 9" Auger for my tractor. Used 6" posts for the straight runs & 8" for the corners & gates. I just drilled the holes, 3ft down & packed the dirt in around the posts, no concrete. Posts are still straight since 2007.
