Any ideas on an AC vent that doesn't stay in position?
My 1986's left-most dashboard vent flops closed a few moments after I aim it where I want. It's a killer b/c that vent is one that can aim the AC right on the drivers face.
Is there a way to tighten the preload or something on it so the louvers stay where they are put? I'd buy another if I had to... how are they removed? https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/jc...=w1282-h961-no |
Super glue ?

Glue would work if you never wanted to move it. Are they still available new? I think they just snap in from the front. Most of the time it's a plastic vent guide mounting into a plastic frame and they just get loose with age.

No glue...
Grab some clear silicone, yes like tub and tile kind, and strategically place a little pearl of it on a solid surface but where the mobile part of the vent passes by. This will fill a bit of a gap, give the moving part of the vent some friction so it will stay in place and it won't always be stuck in the same position. |
Use a toothpick to hold it open. Paint it black. Tell people it's from the Black Forest. SmileWavy

I super glued mine.

I stuck an earplug in one of the holes on my work truck, works like a charm, holds both the horizontal and verticle flaps. Probably not the look you're going for though.

Little foam plug or cut a C shaped piece to hold it one position.
|
Try black dental floss. Tie it around one of the pivots. You need to create friction against the slats.
|
Cram a match book cover with into it a condom stapled to it....
|
Put a drop or two of blue Loctite in each of the pivot points...use a toothpick to apply it if access is limited. Once dry, it'll provide just the right amount of friction to hold the vent in any position.

I used two little pieces of rubber trim, both cut about 1/16" too long to keep a little lateral pressure. Been holding great for two years now with no adhesive.
