PBS programming...easy to see why there are forces at work trying to kill it.

Consider our Porsche's, as they are not for everyone, and neither is PBS.

Here's what programming one won't see on PBS: the people and or persons with paranormal abilities or superpowers. The Jerry-Springer style
"news", complete with local car chase scene's so we can stay "informed".
Another cop show...another medical show...walking dead shows...talking smack shows, and the endless
violence, explosions, etc ad nasuem.

Although many of their programs can be considered dry, seeing some of their programs, such as the recent Roosevelt Series, the history of the Jews coming to America, the PBS News Hour(which I actually feel like I came away from like it wasn't a dog-n-pony show), etc makes for actual pleasurable viewing versus
someone trying to appeal to the most basic primal level of violence and sex.

Maybe some of you can notice what happened to other cable channels, such as the History Channel(and what it has become) for instance.

I consider PBS one of the last vestiges of humanity, in a world on the fast track to nowhere.

My 2-cents.

Yes. A rational, systematic, and balanced level of thinking has been under attack these days.
Chaos and strife is ripe for exploitation.

Our kids like the PBS kids portion as well as Nova Science Now (or whatever the name is).

Can't really make sense of what you are saying - not exactly sure whether or not you support PBS or not...

So...

PBS has HUGE money (although they constantly project that they is jus a poh lil public nuth'n struggling to stay afloat.)

Anyway, they are run by people. Story-tellers present with their personal bend. coughagendacough

I'm a loyal listener to our local NPR radio station with a news/talk format. They take an in-depth approach to news. Some of the talk shows I can't appreciate.

The one thing that drives me nuts is the agenda. It's like an unrelenting left wing slant on everything.

I can't understand how their promotion of Democratic politicians isn't some kind of election law violation.

That's why I watch Fox News and listen to Rush Limbaugh. There is no slant there at all.

Yeah, but those soft measured voices ... they make tyranny seem all so reasonable.

fwiw, I tend to listen to NPR when the R's are in control, and right-wing radio when the Left is in control.(get the otherside of the information) ...although the end of Bush-term, NPR and their Obama-gushing was intolerable. :-/

I don't watch a lot of PBS but our local NPR station is #1 on my radio.
I watch PBS News Hour maybe once a week. I apparently don't watch it as much as conservatives do, because I don't see any political bias.

Soft, measured voices like Hitler or Goebbels?

I read both sides of the street. NYT, WSJ, etc. Balance. Know what the others are pushing on us. All you really need to know is what the big multi-national corporations and too-big-to-fail banks want. If you know that then the rest is all just noise. (Invest accordingly.)

I love PBS! I also watched the Roosevelt's (looooooong documentary) and the history of the Jews (a smattering of anti-Christian rhetoric but hey, it was still good history).

But then I like science and history, I understand the new NOVA format (4x15 minute subjects) is geared more to the younger crowd but I preferred the old one hour shows.

And yes, the history channel has become a joke...
But are we really surprised? We have two music channels that don't play music and two cooking channels that mostly doesn't play cooking programs.

But then I READ BOOKS too so I guess I'm a dinosaur.

Oh... and I don't watch the news... any news (the horror!)

If by Forces you mean the internet, then, yeah, I get what you're saying. Broadcast TV - dead-man walking. Well, the majority of it will be seeing a major contraction over the next few years. (continuing the trend)

Perhaps PBS can pivot nicely to the interwebs. The Yellow Pages thought they could.

Yes, but I still have to fund it even if I don't watch it. Kill the government funding, and let it live or die based on its own performance.

I listen to some things on PBS, mostly the news, Antique Road Show and a few specials. I take all news programs with a grain of salt. They all ask leading questions in their interviews, including those on programs like the News Hour. Questions like, "Don't you think ???", "Wasn't it ?????" I notice that kind of thing & like it when occasionally someone calls them out on it, but the in depth coverage is better than other networks.
