sometimes i wish i was a veterinarian.
my dog is getting old!! i think he is 15. we adopted him at 11.
what a journey!! last night he had a bad night. up all night huffing and puffing..pacing the house. he would lay down and try to sleep and jump up like a something stabbed him in the ass. he is doing normal now. called the vet and he suggested i just wait and see. i think i slept one hour last night. i was having sympathy pains. he was up, i was up. times like this make me wish i was a pet-doc. damn..and not just for the vast money savings. i just want the old man-dog comfortable. nap time..for the both of us. had to take the day off. i hope he sleeps tonight so i can sneak him into my office tomorrow. i just want to watch him. keep an eye on the guy. dang dogs..

We have three "rescue" dogs...my son's is a 14 year-old chocolate lab that was just diagnosed with lymphoma a few days ago.
The only thing my son (aged 16) asked for on his last birthday was some stairs so his dog could climb up on the bed with him at night, as she had aged to the point that she couldn't jump up anymore. We had a lot of plans for the summer that we immediately shelved so we can be with her.

He's a cute little guy. So far he's had 4 years in a great home. I know you've treated him well.
It's hard, isn't it? I can't stand to see innocent animals suffer. I wouldn't be a very good vet. I know their suffering gives clues to what is wrong and what can be done to cure it, but it's hard to watch it. If I was a vet half my patients would be sedated - along with me.

try as you did.. ![]() he got to you and now you care.. my SAM is doing better now.. but few weeks ago I was having those talks with self.. you know..the ride, tears that follow, empty space.. he's older now for sure.. but that bounce & spring is leaving.. so like you.. I will do all I can to make him happy & comfortable.. and sadly that includes .. breaking my heart once again... just as his brothers & sister did before.. wishing you & your pal .. much more time & happy tails.. These are difficult threads to read and to comment on.
Just make sure that he drinks plenty of water. If it seems that he's got hip or joint pain, maybe you can cut an aspirin into 1/4, and grind it up to powder, mix with sugar and some food. That'll give him some relief. I've taken my dogs to work for over 20 years. Lost my 17 1/2 year old Cockapoo, who was my avatar on this forum for years, last October. I still never talk about that. |

I totally read "I wish I was a vegetarian", so your post was making absolutely no sense to me. Then I re-read the title and realized I was an idiot.
Hope the old man gets a good night's rest, Vash. Hip/joint pain can be hell on certain breeds, especially.

sorry for your loss rusnak..
gotta disagree on the aspirin.. no on the aspirin.. it can cause bleeding & ulcers.. take him to the Vet .. my SAM is responding very well to high dose of joint supplements.. & 100 mg of Rymadil.. like from not moving.. to walking with his pack in 3 weeks.. I hope he is ok. I have a 12 year old blind rescue lab that I have had for about 6 weeks now. After a weekend camping and swimming she's had bad diarrhea for several days. Last night was the first night we slept well in days and seems much better today. You go from getting up with infants to waiting up for teenagers to taking care of old dogs in the middle of the night. I've decided I'll probably never get a good nights sleep again :-)

Retired, finally

Hope your old pup does OK.
As a veterinarian, be glad you are not one, as I have had times where every night was like that.

Be a Vet? No thank you. It's hard enough watching our own animals get old without having to make decisions about others loved pets.
This has been a bad week. We have one dog diagnosed with early stages of kidney failure, so she is on a low protein diet. The second dog is on anti-inflammatory for hip displacia. Senior cat is on thyroid medication. She's deaf as a post and is about 19 years old. I just laid the next in line to rest on Wednesday, as she was in the last phase of kidney failure (age 15). The next one in line had an impacted bowel and had to be manually reamed out. Don't get me started on the horses. Over the years we've said "Goodbye" to so many. I don't think I want another dog or cat. ![]() Les
