No, the robot did not grab the guy, it just moved and crushed him against a steel plate.

It looks like the killed man was standing inside the line and told the one outside to launch the robot for checking purpose.
The line was not finished and still owned by the external company.

If this is true, then he made a tragic mistake. If you are in the work envelope of a robot, you should have sole and total control of the robot. One pair of robots that I work with that we use to paint 777 wings have an additional requirement of a second "dead man" and a second person when working in the cell with the robot in addition to being in teach mode.

Going off the top of my head here, but a robot should be limited in speed to just under 10 inches per second with a person in the cell. It's out of an ISO standard, but I don't recall which one or the corresponding metric measurement for speed.

I'm not debating the speed that the robot was moving at, just that the operator was doing something he shouldn't have. The "good 'ol US of A" was just a wise crack for entertainment value.

I'm sorry but this is like someone driving around the gates at a train stop, getting hit by the train, and the newspapers posting a story "man gets killed by train!"

And I never saw anyone screaming "the trains are out to kill us!!!"

Industrial robots are just power tools, and need to be treated with all the precautions of working with a lathe, mill, of table saw.

Just IMHO

The guy was 22, so maybe no experience and maybe the other one also was very young.
This is just a tragic accident. I think this happens now and then, the security functions are in place and are working most of the time. It just happens that people disables them or they where not in place 100% yet.
