wtf I thought boat paint was nuts

I know some old paints were lead based
sounds like this stuff is GOLD based

are these paints polyurethane ?

can you still buy lacquer ?
or old style enamel ?

Most now a days are isocyanates. Supplied air is a must. Isocyanate sounds like cyanide, for a good reason.

You can still buy enamel (about $50 /gl but my painter suggested single stage urethane for my boat.Dedicated boat paint is similar but I wouldn,t trust car paint for a boat left in the water all the time . My old Boston Whaler spends most of it,s time on a trailer and it,s most valuable part is it,s new motor
Lacquer isn,t sold in most locations anymore because of all the Volotiles (VOC) regulations now. Water based paints will eventually replace everything used today

Nason paint products, btw - is what my body / paint guy prefers to use. He could use any product as he owns a small shop and does very well but really likes the overall performance.

In the US, depends on the state and might include a certificate for waste controls (proper trained handling, etc.).

The 2 part urethanes are great to work with. Wicked though to the body. Even for those a distance from the booth. Careful all.

Anybody ever tried a PPG product called Pithane? Industrial product at around $100 gallon.

My brother in law and his son are both licensed autobody painters. They will still do a home garage job once in a while but wear tyvek suits ,rubber gloves and a fresh organic vapour respirator. They use supplied air at work so are no doubt playing roulette with their health.

I'm not sure what he used, but I know someone who was a top 911 painter. Met him 25 years ago when I apprenticed at an independent. Saw him again 2 years and he was a shell of a man. Cliche, I know, but that is the best description, he was really destroyed, almost like a zombi. He said the paint did it.

Wow! You painted a corvette in 40 hours, you are a rockstar. Mine was a bit rougher, and I went down to bare glass, but I had hundreds of hours in it before I was done.
Looks pretty good !!
I think I am ready to do my sc over . I have been practicing for some time now, and pretty sure I can pull off a decent job . Modern paint is expensive, but it makes an amatuer like myself turn our pretty nice work .
The car had a respray over the original forest green metallic in Red. It was great for a track rat, autocrorss beater but I am thinking about making it pretty again.

A typical 911 refinish stripped to bare metal, epoxy primer base, 2K primer ( 1 gallon w/hardner), top quality top coats ( single stage or two stage, doesn't matter) I'll have no less than $3500.00 in materials.

At the other end of the extreme it makes you wonder what Maaco uses...

RF5BPilot 12-09-2015 07:21 AM

So, are the paint shops exaggerating the retail prices and giving a lot better prices to paint shops?

Although, recently, I visited two auto repair/restoration shops that have brought their paint mixing in house. So, is this a shrinking market for the traditional paint shops, now compensating by raising prices?

Hm.

several years ago I stripped a 1980 SC myself. Then had maaco paint it They wanted something like $8-900. I told them I wanted a better than their usual job I insisted they do a $1500 job It still looked very good 2 years later when I sold it.most maaco are independently owned franchises and can do good work if they want to. I doubt they used standard maaco paint on mine but it certainly wasn,t $3500 either. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449680008.jpg
