Stop the presses, Bloom County is returning !!

Opus, Bill the Cat, Steve Dallas are returning,... who woulda thunk it.

For those of you not around in the 80's, Bloom County, Doonesbury and Calvin and Hobbes were by far the most popular comic strips...

and for those of you not familiar with what a newspaper is, there was this section called the comics....

I miss Calvin & Hobbes. Will have to dig out one the books tonight now.

Bloom County was epic though.

reverie 07-13-2015 03:51 PM

I love Bloom County. I hope the local newspaper starts carrying it again. Ack! :)

stomachmonkey 07-13-2015 03:56 PM

Brilliant strip.

I have most if not all the compilation books.

legion 07-13-2015 03:59 PM

The Far Side was by far my favorite.

the 80s was the last gasp of the newspaper strip as an art form.

other than dilbert i can't think of anything worthwhile in the last 20 years.

No Joke.. this article resurrected thoughts of how great the comics were in those days..
Larson's Far Side, Watterson's Calvin & Hobbes, Trudeau and Doonesbury, Herman, Gahan Wilson's morbid comics... I fear those days are long gone..

Shaun @ Tru6 07-13-2015 04:18 PM

Jack, sorry to break it to you, those days are definitely gone.

rusnak 07-13-2015 04:29 PM

Doonesbury was never ever funny. Just plain weird.

C&H was wickedly witty.

herr_oberst 07-13-2015 04:30 PM

There's still some good ones. The local newspaper only publishes 4 days a week now, so I have to find them online.

Some of my faves;

Cul de Sac
Dinosaur Comics
Mutts
Pearls before Swine
Dilbert
(Prince Valiant is my Sunday morning guilty pleasure, don't tell anyone.)

I own the complete Calvin and Hobbes 3 volume hardbound set. I sat down when I first got it and read every one of the comics and all the liner notes. It took several days, and it was a great experience. I plan to read them again this winter when the nights are long.
Damnation, but the world has gone to hell since Watterson decided to retire. Coincidence?

Porsche-O-Phile 07-13-2015 04:35 PM

Awesome!!!

Macroni 07-14-2015 01:03 AM

Exactly. Just real strange.

Dilbert is the only great comic out now that I know of.

On my first date with the lady that I have now been married to for 23 years we discussed the Far Side. We were both big fans so we knew the other had strange sense of humor and must be worth getting to know each other.

I had some of the Far Side books and she had some of the others. No duplication so it was a match made on the Far Side!

Noah930 07-14-2015 07:37 AM

Just in time. Bill the Cat for President.

Ack!

onewhippedpuppy 07-14-2015 08:39 AM

The Far Side and Calvin & Hobbs will never be matched. I agree with everyone else, Dilbert is the only one worthwhile anymore.

I've been looking for today's Bloom County, but I can't find it.

Not sure what's going on...

The Far Side has mastery over irony. When I was in college, the school newspaper ran Mat Groenig (sp?) comics, which later gave rise to The Simpsons.
