Info needed on a 1989 Carrera 4

Tell me the good, bad and ugly about them.

Buddy found one. I know nothing about them. He said the motor sounded "weird"

Going to look at it later.

Looked up the Hagerty price guide. How correct is it on values?

The 4 wheel drive system is crazy complex and stupid expensive to repair.

They are fun when working properly but can cost silly amounts to repair.

Thanks, those give me things to look for. :)

The AWD system can be expensive to repair, but typically they are pretty robust.

I have '90. I think it's a great car.

Google 'Christmas tree', that's a more frustrating one.

What are they asking? Prices have gone very high recently....

^non-airbag for '89. If I recall, first 250 units imported were Guards Red. From what I can see of the pics, tail lamp hasn't turned pink or collected water. As someone mentioned, quite a heavy and over complex drivetrain. Hadn't realized the jump in value. Maybe its being 'cool' to have the air-cooled!

A guy used to come to the autocross in OKC with a C4 with a 4.0l motor in it. Nasty car!

I think Glen is talking about a certain red targa if I had to guess. And yes I recall that guy spending a small fortune on repairs on that car. Very pretty though!

Here's the Hagerty values:

As to what they are asking I'll tell you if I pass on it. :)

Before the 996 came along, the early 964 C4 was the red-headed step-child of the 911 world. Back in the day (when G50 Carreras were selling for $20-$25k) it was fairly common to see them pop up for sale under $15k. With the out-of-control market today, I probably wouldn't even consider one unless it was a ridiculously good deal. Too many other 911 variants out there to be had for under $40k that would be a better buy (IMO).

Plus, that particular car looks well used, and probably closer to the "fair" column than the "good" column. The wheels are not helping it's cause either. YMMV of course...

Those are not the greatest photos, (or the worst), but it looks fairly clean from what is shown. The seats look excellent for the age and it's a very low mileage car. Not sure where anyone is getting "well used" from those photos, maybe the little bit of shoe dirt on the threshold(?) That is nothing and could be seen on a car that is one day old. It's interesting how people read, (or don't read), photos.

speeder 07-16-2015 08:08 PM

The carpet does need a good shampoo on second look. Impossible to judge paint w/o better photos but looks good from what is shown.

$25-$30 US is my guess. Based solely on what I've seen price-wise online.

I'm saying at least $35k, probably more like $40k if the pictures are correct. There are a ton of 964 Targas and Cabs out there for sale, a nice coupe is getting hard to come by.

It was not just that one red C4. I was at Parade in the Tech Sessions and one of the professional shop owners was discussing the C4 drive system. He showed a few of the parts that go bad and they were $$$$ and many of them.

Ok I went and looked at it. I started to take lots of pictures but went what for. It looks good from 25' away but I need glasses. It looks like someone wiped it down with a dry micro cloth towel. Every panel is covered in fine scratches. The carpet is worn and dirty. The seats are in good shape and fit me nicely. Hood realise cable is broken. If I had plyers I could have opened it. Started up very easy. Slight miss that went away at higher RPM's. Didn't have "Christmas Lights" but dam close. 4 wheel drive icon was on with a highlighted area over the torque tube. Did that mean the $2,200 seal needs replacing? Or more expensive repairs? Brake light was on. Brakes felt fine. Clutch pedal went down about 3" before engaging and started about a inch off the floor. Adjustment or new clutch? I let it warm up few minutes and drove it at 10 mph down to the end of the yard and back up again (500' each way). Could smell oil in cabin. Parked it where it was found and oil smoke was coming out of the grill (very bad leak). Power windows didn't work from any switch. My mind said no thanks then.

It was at a auction house. He wants $10,000 (about $7,000 USD) and was offered $5,000 (about $3850 USD) Didn't accept it and it's being run thru the auction next week.

I would buy that in a heartbeat. It's easily worth double that in parts if nothing else.

I have to agree worth way more for parts than $7. A running 3.6 has to be worth $2-3K as a core and more running, even as a leaker . A G50 trans core is another $2+. Hagerty would see the car like #4
