Diesel down to $2.32

Filled up the F350 yesterday. It was nearly empty and Put in 33 gallons for just over $75.

As I was filling, I noticed the 87 Octane gasoline was $2.49.

There was a report on the local news that with the Iran sanctions dropping and ensuing oil glut, the price of gasoline might drop under $2 per gallon.

Good, I won't feel guilty about driving my F250 Powerstroke.

Porsche-O-Phile 07-17-2015 04:32 AM

When home heating oil gets below $2/gal I'll consider using my oil fired boiler again - not until.

^I sure hope not!

RIP my industry and job.

Since diesel is a by product from the refinement of oil and the production of gasoline, it never has made much sense to me why it is normally the higher priced fuel. It's about time it dropped.

Well if you were still in S.D. with the price of gasoline hitting close to $4.00/gal., you would also be paying $4.30+ for diesel. We're always the ones being screwed.

In Los Angeles, diesel has consistently been about $1 a gallon cheaper than 87 octane. This is of course due to the high price of gas while diesel seems to closely track national prices. Well, not quite...I just drove 2000 miles and paid as little as $2.40 for diesel in the Midwest.

You definitely need to find the cheap stations here in L.A., some will try to charge .50 or $1 more a gallon for diesel than I pay downtown in the gritty area where semis fill up. I've also seen the same cheap prices scattered all over the metro area, though.

This is good news as my fleet is currently 2 diesel to 2 gas...now if only Jeep would put that VM Motori diesel in the wrangler so I could get the wife a diesel too...

URY914 07-17-2015 07:43 AM

87 regular is $2.44/gal in Jacksonville today.

Evans, Marv 07-17-2015 08:34 AM

Denis. Down here all the gasoline & fuel prices seem to track the same within a few cents. Seems like it doesn't pay to burn extra fuel to fill up somewhere for 2 cents per gallon less. There definitely doesn't seem to be even a ghost of a free market.

Arizona_928 07-17-2015 08:48 AM

Was 2.41 when I filled up for diesel last week. Kinda happy if gets lower. Might fill up the hmmwv... Haha

You DO realize this is exactly what's going on, right? A glut is being produced by OPEC member nations with the specific intent of driving the prices down to kill American production (particularly shale oil production) and American petro jobs.

It's likely the break-even point is pretty low (some have even claimed as low as $25/bbl) for shale oil production so I think this is something that's going to stick around for a while - or until the OPEC country oil sheiks get sick of playing the game and want the newer model Ferraris rather than their one or two year old models - then they'll start cutting production again.

Whatever the reasons I'm certainly not complaining any. If gasoline goes <$2/gal too I'll be quite happy.

We filled up diesel in OC yesterday for $2.98 and saw a Chevron in Oceanside on the 76 that advertised it at $3.09. Usually .60 cheaper than regular.

I hear you about driving around to save a couple bucks but I work Downtown and drive right by the cheap place to get on the freeway anyways. The nice thing about diesel vehicles is that you're not filling the tank every time you turn around and can grab the cheap stuff when it presents itself. :)

gasbuddy is your friend

vash 07-17-2015 02:01 PM

i thought Los Angeles was having a fuel emergency..$6.00 per gallon!!

is it over? things back to normal?

A930Rocket 07-17-2015 03:30 PM

Filled up with 87 for $2.27 per gallon today.

Evans, Marv 07-17-2015 08:36 PM

I have to take my comment above about diesel fuel prices being over $4.00/ gal. Odd thing. The online diesel fuel and gasoline prices say diesel was over $4.00/gal. When I went into town today, diesel was in the $2.85 range but in checking the online prices later, it still says the highest price for diesel in the past 24 hrs. was $4.00+/gal. I'm confused. Internet I guess.

speeder 07-17-2015 10:56 PM

Marv, if it told you that the highest price for diesel was $4.00, that's probably right. Someone is selling it for that much somewhere. But of course the "normal" price is around/under $3.00.

aigel 07-17-2015 11:34 PM

2.78 here in town for the first fill on the new ecodiesel truck. I am now down to the 993 as the only gas powered car in the household ... good timing? I hope it lasts. Many places here have almost $1 delta between gas and diesel.

This is bad for the oil industry in the US but you do realize that it is a shot in the arm for the rest of the economy. The average household must burn thousands of dollars in gas every year - drop that by 25% - that's a lot of money freed up.
