stupid/crazy people

It's been raining in SoCal for 2 days now, with up to 4" in some areas. This is the first serious rain in well over 6 months. The boy and I took the p-car (obligatory 911 content) out for a little exercise today, carefully running up PCH to check out the surf. We hit PHC at Sunset and much to my surprise, there were 10 guys actually out. Now it wasn't so much the lousy conditions (sure, there was swell but totally hacked and stormy), but these guys are going to be sick as dogs in a day or two. All the storm drains go to the ocean, and in particular this area of Santa Monica bay is nasty...it fails bacteria screening even when the weather is *good*. The usual rule is wait 3 days after a rain storm...dilution is the solution to pollution.

It does remind me of an amusing anecdote. Back when I was 16 there was a particularly stiff swell that hit San Diego. I saw some video on tv and got stoked. My mom said, "no way". I said, "oh, I"m just going down to watch." When I got there, it was too good to pass up. I slapped on a set of Churchills and went out body surfing at the OB jetty, 6-9'. When I came in there was a reported from the newspaper who asked me how it was. Like an idiot, I told him and gave him my name. Lo and behold, the next days paper had an article on the large surf with a quote from me. busted. I learned a valuable lesson...never give your real name.

You think that's crazy? This morning I'm driving toward my house and I see my neighbor from 3 doors down and across the street. Its raining, he has no shirt on, and he's trimming the grass around his sidewalk - WITH A PAIR OF HOUSEHOLD SCISSORS. Evidently he is world famous for being a Vietnamese General during the Vietnam war. I'm thinking the sake has riddled his brain finally.

Why do I find this funny? Average annual rainfall here is light compared to the people who live in the coast mountains...about 3 1/2 feet per year... Liquid sunshine! But if you like to ride storm surf? It's hitting the Orygun beaches now...

I surfed Pedro Point and Ocean Beach last weekend, and it was 2-4 and glassy - about the best small-wave surfing I've ever seen. With the new Thomn8r Tank board, I was catching just about everything I tried for, and with the volume in this board, I can get out to the nose pretty easily. Even more interesting was all the old-timer locals (Pedro Point Surf Club consists of mostly guys 50+) were saying "check out the old board on that bus, even though it was barely a week old...

Sort of OT:

Today at the grocery store, busy time, people bustling in and out and hurrying around in their Super Ugly Vehicles, these two people decided to just stop and chat in the doorway. People never cease to amaze me...

BTW: Thom, nice bus. Dad had a '71. When he sold it the guy who bought it had his kids do handprints all over it with auto paint. Looked very cool.

Strange?

This morning at about 7am I'm driving the Targa over to a friends house to help him put his hardtop back on his Jeep.

It's raining, windy and cold (typical PNW stuff). I pass by this bus stop and there's this guy who's the spittin' image of Roy Orbison (thick jet black hair, big black sunglasses and bad mutten chop sideburns) standing in the rain, leaning on the bus stop with nothing on but running shorts and flip flops. This guy was white as a ghost and at least 40 lbs over weight. Made for quite a sight.

There was another person waiting for the same bus, but she was huddled over on the far side of the stop, pretty much just keeping to herself....

Welcome to public transportation in Seattle.

No, that's not it . . . .
It's that even the VW Micro-buses are going for the R-Gruppe look.
