Meet BIG RED!

It was a lot of work to go from the ugly green blob that this 1977 416 troop carrier was, to how it is today! Many new parts were used to get it into the fine condition it is in now. My wife named him "BIG RED", so I said its all yours! as she always wanted a red Mercedes convertible! But I don't think this is the model she was thinking of! So I guess I will have to sell it. Or trade it for something, like a nice Cayman S!

I need this! (Like a hole in my head). It would look awesome parked in the street up front! Nice work on the restoration. Is red a stock color on these? In Germany they often are orange, working the highways.

I am boggled that it is a convertible. Why would someone want a convertible work truck? Post a pic with the top down

THAT is awesome!

Is that the exhaust in front of the rear DS wheel?
Seem like an odd spot for that.

Yes that is the one I got a the beginning of the year. See what a little hard work and a bunch of money will do! I put in quite a few new parts into this one. But I had a good base to start with, so it was worth doing. Should make someone a great truck. And someone wanted a photo of the truck without the top on.

What is the gearing, that would be sweet dragging my trailer to the track, if I didn't have to leave a day early to get there

A great bit of work went into this truck to get it like it is now. Stripped 7 coats of paint to bare metal for a respray, new floor well welded in, and a ton of new parts, like seats, top, seals, heater, bed floor and more! I will be asking $35k for this one, as it only has 932 hours on the meter and 17k km. on the speedo. It has standard axles, so top speed is about 55mph, but the gearing can be changed for higher top speed.

That's very reasonable. I have seen some 406s & 416s selling for more, that didn't look this good and had not had any recent work done.

Unless I was going to keep it long-term, I can't put that much work into the 404 because of the law of diminishing returns. They are great trucks but are a little less versatile than the 406 & 416, which limits their market.

Von - did you chemical strip the old paint, or sand the whole thing with a DA ?
