San Francisco from Aug 2 to Aug 5
Surprise trip to San Francisco this week. I've never been, and am excited.
Must sees? I have to be mindful of my budget since I've been saving for an upcoming trip to Italy at the end of the month, and the exchange rate is ugly. Any cool car stuff? Rob |

Honestly for a first trip you can probably do great with little to no money at all. Just walking around that place can be fun. Ride the trolly cars, walk around Chinatown, North Beach, Wharf, Pier 39 and you'll get quite the array of people watching. If the Giants are playing, a long stroll along the Embarcadero ending up at AT&T park is a lot of fun.
Car wise, there is a great museum in Danville but it's 30 minutes outside the city so it might be a bit far.

Yeah if my visitors had a day or two, we go to the usual:
1. Golden Gate Bridge, either ends would work. 2. Palace of Fine Arts, while reciting dialogue from The Rock. 3. Lombard Crookedest St. 4. Ghirardelli Sq. 5. Painted Ladies. 6. Fisherman's Wharf. 7. Pier 39. 8. Union Sq. All free other than food, or a toll if you cross the bridge. Forget Alcatraz unless you pre-purchased a ticket. Tripadvisor.com could also be a great resource. Now this could be a cultural thing, but our friends like to take pictures in front of Silicon Valley HQs of tech companies. That's a day of driving around the bay to places like Google, Facebook, and wherever else they fancy. |

Driving across to the Eastbay might be a pain in the a**. The local bay area transit system (BART) will shutdown for repair. First time they have done this which will force riders onto buses and ferries to get between SF and the easbay.
However there is much to see and do in the City. As mentioned above...cable car from Powell street downtown to Fisherman's Wharf. Once there nice walk to the Marina great views of Golden Gate Bridge and more... Enjoy. |

Don't miss the Alcatraz tour...get your tickets early. Check out the Musee Mecanique and tour the WWII submarine USS Pampanito...both down near Fisherman's Wharf. Try riding the Cable Cars too...the POWELL-HYDE line has the best views and the CALIFORNIA line is the least crowded. The Cable Car Museum is really interesting too. Head up to Twin Peaks for a fantastic 360° view of the City. Have a drink at the Top of the Mark on Nob Hill. The Disney Museum in the Presideo is pretty cool. It's not just about Disneyland, but more about Walt's life & career. For a little culture, check out the DeYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park. The Exploritorium is big fun for kids of all ages. Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge.
Driving around SF is a total PITA and trying to park a car in the downtown area is nearly impossible...use public transit if you can. And bring some warm clothes...summer weather in SF can still be quite chilly, especially in the evenings.
