New advice about how to deal with a Pelican Parts sale

Background:

Needed to get a few parts for my car, posted up in the used parts marketplace about what I wanted. A guy PM'd me that he had the parts, and how much. I went and looked at his profile and any comments about him, and all seemed positive, and he's a long-time member. So I felt good about PayPalling a few hundred bucks for some parts. He said he'd message me back with the actual shipping costs.

Silence.

So, now it's been a week, and I have not heard from the guy, despite multiple PMs asking for the shipping amount and the tracking number. I know that sometimes, life happens to people and that's fine - I'm not in a giant hurry. But at what point do I file a PayPal claim and out the guy? How long should I wait for the guy to get back to me to say "hey look, I just got slammed at work, I'll send your stuff..." or something. Anything. What's the normal amount of time that's reasonable?

If he is on Pelican, see when was the last time he posted. If he hasn't posted since before your pm's I would wait a little longer than a week. If he is well know on Pelican I wouldn't go dragging him through the mud because he was on vacation or in the hospital. If has posted in the last few days....

I can tell from looking at his profile when he last logged in. He logs in every day. Sometimes more than once.

I will wait for others to chime in then. Sounds like he is avoiding you by not responding to your pm's. Maybe it takes time to get shipping materials and quotes. But not responding to a pm after he offered that avenue to you in the first place would be a red flag to me. But I shall wait and see what others say may be his reasons for that. There may be a good reason....

If he's a long time Pelican, give him some time imo...
Even though he's logging on, I personally don't check PMs either, and answer my phone and emails when I get 'round 2 it

PM me his name

Has he been logging in the last week? Sometime a catastrophic computer failure will put people off line for a while.

I think you should clarify in the title that it's a Classifieds section sale.

And if the dude PMed you, soliciting the sale, then goes silent, that is a red flag. Something is not right.

Sorry you're having trouble.

In the future make sure to get the combined total first,

because usually that means the seller has boxed and weighed the thing he's allegedly shipping you, and will probably send it.

Update: when I arrived home today, I found a tracking number and request for shipment payment in my PP PM inbox. In my mind, I was going to wait until tomorrow night, send an e-mail and a PM saying that was going to open a PayPal dispute and out the guy on the forums if I didn't hear something by 2359HRS Saturday.

He came through, no outing required. If the parts show up in good condition, then I'll even give him a good review in the feedback thread. I am unhappy about the lack of comms, but happy I waited before going thermonuclear on his ass.

Glad that worked out for you!

I know I surf Pelican mostly from iPhone making it difficult to respond to PMs...

I haven't sold anything on these Pelican classifieds, but in the past, I sold many Datsun Z parts on Ebay, and ZCar.com. As soon as someone asked, I had links to get a shipping quote within minutes, and I would usually ship the same day, or next day after recieving money. Sometimes for those who don't sell much, obtaining a box, packing material, and the proper quotes are difficult, but no excuse not to keep in contact.
