Dad's Izuzu Rodeo in Canada...impossible to bring to California?
Has anyone tried to bring a Canadian car to bring to California?
I know potentially this could bring nightmare scenarios trying to smog/register the car here in Nazi-Land(where already it's a nightmare to smog my Porsche). Thanks!

No offense... Buy why? Not a rare car. Just sell it in Canada, and buy another one here...

I was going to say, if your going to bring something over, make it a BJ42 or BJ60. Something worthwhile!

Here is one of the references:
http://www.bar.ca.gov/pdf/Laws_and_Regs_Manual_2014_LegReg_20140718.pdf Paragraph 43151 talks about this but like most things there are probably other rules? I would try to find a local CARB/BAR/DMV office and have them tell you what to do IN PERSON. Get the person's name, etc and what will help you is the family connection. |

I'll share my experience that relates to importing three of my vehicles from Canada to Colorado, when I lived in Toronto and moved to Colorado Springs.
Two of the cars were Toyota Corolla GT-S (one of which was very highly modified with a supercharged MR2 engine), both these Canadian spec cars did not meet US bumper, seat belt or emissions specs and the only way I could work around this was apply for an EPA exemption (done through the branch in Washington D.C). Fortunately, my moving company knew the ins and outs as they had done so many corporate moves between Canada and the US and were helpful in advising how to proceed. The EPA quickly approved my application but stated that the cars had to brought in for personal use only and not sold (for profit or business related reasons). I seem to remember there was a minimum amount of time I had to keep the cars as well (three years sticks in my head for whatever reason). Once I imported the cars successfully, then the State laws apply for emissions (for example), fortunately in Colorado, the emissions laws for older vehicles are very friendly and registering, getting title and doing a VIN inspection with the State Troooper (to confirm the car is not stolen) was straightforward and required a few hours here and there. Hope this helps. Yasin
