I installed Win 10 on one of the systems I have. So far so good. I have zero use for games. One of the "apps" is X-box. I have as much use for that as I do for ISIS. I had to look around online to find a way to delete it. It is gone along with several other useless "apps"

John, I'm trying to remember which version we started with at GE. We had these massive "Clam Shell" laptops, 286 processors, minimal memory. We had to "clean" the startup routines to eliminate any programs running in memory to get the Windows shell to load. The only reason we needed this was when we wanted to access our Field Engineer CD which had the drawings for just about every Gas Turbine GE ever made. Might have been Win 1. It was 1991...
I know that my first decent regular laptop had Windows 3.0 on it and some of the programs were not compatible in 3.1 and 3.11. |
What are you guys using for Photo organizing?
I don't think Picasa works for Windows 10...Which blows cause I really like Picasa. |
Organizing? Who organizes?

I hate Windows 8. I can't believe they didn't go back to Windows 7 with a rebadge. Working with 8 makes me wonder if a group of monkeys locked in a room didn't develop it.
|
One reason I upgraded that one machine was to get way from Win 8.1. It did blow chunks.
So far I can get around in Win 10 and It seems stable but it has only been a couple of days. |
I don't know if this is a specific Windows 10 problem, but I've recently gone to a couple of old guitar websites (youtube stuff) & copped a bunch of unwanted adware that I had to remove.

So, Mrs. Beard killed my Lenovo Carbon X1. I can fix it, but the parts will take a few weeks. Broken Keyboard and Monitor.
So I brought out my old Dell Latitude E6500. It hasn't been turned on in almost 3 years. Battery is dead, but $19 will bring a replacement. Since it has been a while, I tried to update everything. For some reason, Win 7 Pro didn't want to get the updates. Figured, what the hell, and decided to install Windows 10. I copied my mail files from the X1. Uninstalled any software I'm not going to use and the older version of Office. Upgraded to 10, installed Office 365. Had to re-install AV. Seems good to go. It was a top of the line Laptop from 2009/2010. Dual Core T9600 Processor and 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD drive. |

Looks like I will have to invest in a new laptop soon. Looks like Windows 10 is in my near future. Time to do some research on latest laptops. |
I bought a new Lenovo backdated with W7.

Just upgraded our big home desktop from 8.1 to 10 on Friday; so far so good! It does address some of the more annoying aspects of 8 but I haven't had time to explore it in depth yet.
|
Other than some of the controls being hidden a little deeper, it seems nearly the same as Win 7. I don't like the EDGE browser, since the scroll bar is too small. The work around is install your favorite. Internet Explorer is also still there.
My biggest complaint is that the "look" of the interface has been "back dated". This is probably because they want a consistent look across platforms - Desktop, Tablets, Phones. |
MSFT tried to back-door install Win10 on my Yoga13. Again. Bastards.
And now the Windows Store is fouling up my Plex client. I give up... |
|
X-ing fingers here and have had good luck with one of the last Asus lap-t w/ OEM win 7. They kept pushing 8 but was able to get W7 ordered in. Very little bloatware and deleted whatever it had plus I preset to warn of any updates.
Thank you and good catch to whoever posted that Forbes article on the three MS KB-fuchuser update. |
Man, I'm so tired of this Windows 10 thing. I downloaded it partially because of harassment from the pop ups and thinking it might be an improvement. After download, lots of items I had with my original Windows 7 were gone. Things like my Fax & Scan. Every time I have to copy pics from my camera's memory card, it won't recognize the card unless I withdraw it and restart the computer and reinsert the card. My stand alone Microsoft Word is gone. Yesterday I thought I would just like get rid of Windows 10 and have my Windows 7 back so I followed the path to do that - Settings, Recovery, etc. When I got to the point of uninstalling Win 10 and reinstalling Win 7, I got a dialog box saying the files to revert to Win 7 had been deleted. Grrrrrr! I've tried to find a website to vent at Microsoft directly, but all you get directed to are chat websites or how to fix Win 10 sites. I'm so pissed, I'm going to buy an Apple computer. I used them years ago, and liked the operating system. It's time to get away from Windows anything. My wife changed over about the same time I did and everything on her lap top transferred over.

There is a reason it is "free". Because while you can install for free, they definitely plan on making their money back off you at some point here. Pay to play on Win10.

Knocked it off the kitchen table. I think she tripped over the power cable. SSD so, no loss of data.

OK, another W10 question, my old computer died, so I bought an HP all-in-one with W10. I'm restoring with Carbonite. It loaded to my recovery "D" drive, not the "C" and filled it up. I deleted the restored stuff in the "D" drive, now I want to clean out my trash. How do I do that?

You can delete the content from that folder and clean it up. Why it's not synchronized with the main recycle bin I can only assume has to do something with the issues you had during your install? |

Thanks, I used to have Vista, so this is totally different. Still figuring it out. Wifi printer, and router, etc. I turn on a computer and point and click, beyond that, I'm sort of lost. |

What I saw, the moment I went to microsoft's website when building my computer a few months ago, is that Microsoft plans on running an "app store" so to speak, every program you buy or want to use, Microsoft will get a cut. I am not 100% sure, but this was my impression. |
Win 10: Can't install Open Office. Won't accept my Win 10 password.....Wants a password for Office 365, which I refuse to buy.

Mmmmmmmm. Like being home from a long business trip. The keys are in the right places, the spacing predictable...new keys...so smooth... |
I have Win 10 on my Lenovo T61 just poking around...

Every 10 minutes or so, Adobe Flash 19.0 and COMsurrogate exe starts running on this computer.
(Flash is set to "ask to activate") MS Security Essentials and Malwarebyes both say this is kosher. Anyone else experience this on Win7? |
It may be one of those "check for updates" tasks. You can go through the startup list and kill things like that. I had to do that for Chrome.
|
Win10 tried to sneak in AGAIN. I disabled that "optional" update, and now Windows Update won't even install security patches.
I'd love to go to Linux on this thing (Lenovo Yoga 13) but I gave both Ubuntu and Fedora a spin via LiveUSB and neither behaved well. I'm starting to feel like a Christian Scientist with appendicitis. |

I installed Win 10 on my 8.1 computer over the weekend. Took about 1/2 hour. I did the "custom" and not "express" install so I could control what would automatically load. Also allows you to click on the "don't automatically send" reports and information about you. Everything working just fine.
|
I'm still running Win 8.getting used to its foibles. Win10 keeps trying to get on. Do I swap one POS for another?

windows 10 disabled my computer dvd drive and the scan software driver for my deskjet 4500 printer. this computer is not old....... XPS 14Z..... WAS working great before I switched over.
the "quick install" loads up with a metric ton of **** you do not need. Including software that wants to charge you for delivering drivers you can get for free on the web. You actually have to delete the particular application to get any drivers off the web.......... stuff acts like a bridge troll. I am beginning to hate this company as much as I detest the apple garbage. I think I have removed most of the bull**** "features" it, but not sure. I tried to revert back to windows 7 and it would not work. I am not a satisfied customer |
