What car is this?

Saw this yesterday. Couldn't find any name or badges on it.

Thought it was kinda cool.

From a distance I thought it was an old Benz.

190SL used to be a $25K car for a nice example. Like the aircooled market, prices have left logic behind. Still prefer the 230-250-280SL's with the Pagoda roof.

I like the later SL's too.

It was a little rough but fixable. Probably not cheap.

Is it just me, or is that fairly reminiscent of a Karmann Ghia?

stomachmonkey 07-31-2015 12:36 PM

Lots of good parts there, also looks like lots of really expensive stuff not there.

Still, looks like a great candidate for finishing off.

Could realistically fetch $40k or more depending on condition of mechanicals.

You could go $100k all in with resto and still double your money.

This 190 SL reminds me of the time that my parents best man at their wedding Jack used to take me in his to the pubs in the backcountry of Norfolk UK . He drove too fast for the narrow roads but the Mercedes was a nimble roadster. I was in my 20's then and he would be in his 60's. It was a moss green colour and manual transmission. Nice car.

The nose looks more like a BMW 507....

Very solid and good handling, but very slow by today's standards. Rust like a sailor's euphemism.

No, but it is very similar to it's 'big brother', the 300 SL roadster.

dafischer 07-31-2015 06:08 PM

Something has been modified on the nose of that one. The grill opening looks wrong.

No it's correct.

They just look funny without the bumpers and grill which BTW at least parts of look to be there sticking out behind the seats.

I love older MBs. That 190SL would be very expensive to finish but well worth it.

Can you still get the bright work?

Something similar, Speedster inspired Lancia Aurelia. Very rare.

Yes, the hard get is the star / front grill which I see a part of in the jumpseat area along with part of a bumper and at least one door sill top.

There's a minimal amount on those cars.

I think that car may be fairly complete, just in pieces.

Depends on what's in the tupperware bins.

To me this is just a sight to behold - beautiful. I can't stand to look under the hood of a modern car and find a sea of plastic covers (and automakers wonder why young car buyers just don't seem to be interested in their products). Almost as important as the exterior and interior styling.

If you want to see the engine you aren't in the target demographic. Sell, lease, and flip before the warranty is up. Ideally never lift the hood. That's the target market. People who want to own a car for ten years (and fix it themselves) aren't ideal customers.

Oh, I realize that. But even in the "enthusiast" cars they are missing the mark.
