Porsche Powered MidEngine VW doublecab!
|
Wow! Love that they went the mid-engine route, wonder about cooling and noise there.

Dang, that dude can fabricate.
I wish I had a neighbor or a buddy with those skills. Cool toy he built! |
The guy shoulda Powder Coated everything..and did a bear metal ground up for all the effort he put into fabricating parts
|
He's a Pelican and has a thread in the Conversion forum. Amazing work.

Nice welds!

Cool stuff. Probably could use more power at almost 3k pounds. Should have sprung for a 3.6. ;) Putting an air cooled engine sure makes the plumbing easy. Well done with focus on function and not a lot of bling!

way cool. those double cabs are awesome to start with, this takes it to a new level of coolness. love the track photos :).

Not much of an engineer, but fab galore! Damn that looks heavy. fwiw John Walker put a 3.2 in the same vintage crew-cab VW. But in the back w/o all that extra steel of this story. |

I kid!! :D :D That thing is cool. At 3000lbs. it still weighs less than most new cars today. |
Island's got a point. A lot of the underpinnings and the engine frame are overbuilt and unnecessarily heavy. You could put a 1000 hp 800 ft/lb engine in there and be fine. That 3.2 puts out nothing in terms of power and torque requiring that type of framing. Just look at what the motor comes with factory in terms of mounting structures. 215 hp in a 3000 lb car isn't going to be terribly exciting and that's part of the reason it plows. As mentioned already, stock location with less fabrication may have been better - albeit half as cool!
