SF is pretty small in area....if you're in "walking shape", just start exploring :D. My gf (at the time) and I walked about eleventy-dozen miles one Sat....
....But like 'Nawlins....the CRAZY begins once the sun goes down....be safe!

Thanks for all the advice. My son is well traveled and will eat most things. He will try everything. Dim Sum is on the list of food. Not any of that in South Carolina (need to go to Charlotte for that).

Dim Sum? Finally, I can be of use! The best in the area is Koi Palace in Daly City. Hong Kong Lounge in the SF proper is probably the best. But beware of a culture shock, it is a bit of a jostle with the locals while waiting for a table.

I hear Yank Sing has really good fried chicken wings. Golden Gate Bakery has some amazing chinese pastries.

Food wise, I enjoy the Mission immensely. Taqueria Vallarta has an amazing taco stand in the front, I recommend their al pastor, lengua and carne asada. Tartine has THE best morning bun I have ever had. I know nobody ever raves about a morning bun, but this is worth mentioning.

General rule of thumb for me in big cities while using yelp is: if it has 1000+ reviews, and has a 4+ star rating, it may not be good but is at least worth trying.

decent post!!! Hong Kong Flower Lounge, is in Milbrae. is there one in the city now? super crowded. i thought Koi palace was okay. dinner was good. kinda expensive.

Golden Gate Bakery is the best egg custard ever. i have honestly never tried anything else there. too busy shoving Daan Taats into the gaping hole in my face.

strangely I have never had dinner there, just Dim Sum. It ranks very highly in my book, but it's been about 5 years since I've eaten at that location.

What is the restaurant across from the Holiday Inn in Chinatown? Is that not HK Lounge?

vash 08-06-2015 09:24 AM

no that is R and J lounge..right?

the place with the crab at night?

cheeze 08-06-2015 09:39 AM

R & G Lounge! Yes, thanks vash.

Dim Sum? If you are adventurous enough, there's Good Luck Dim Sum on Clement St, near See's Candies. They speak very little English and customer service is virtually non existent. It is an experience.

Of course, without a car, getting there might be a problem. Uber to the rescue.

As said earlier, Caltrain will get you to the 4th and King station, a quick left on King St and a block away is AT&T Park. Keep walking far enough you'll get to the Ferry Building. Eat. Go out again. Go back. Stop somewhere along the way. You're done for the day.
