Thoughts On New FN Spoon?
 

Ever since FN announced in April they will be releasing a semi-auto version of the M249 Saw at the end of 2015, I curse living in NewYorkistan under Ayatollah Cuomoni. What a screaming deal...it's going to be somewhere around $7.5K! I know that's a lot for what amounts to a heavy semi-auto rifle with an endless magazine, but I have serious belt-fed envy. Before this, you had to buy converted m249's & m240 bravos from Ohio Ordnance, Machine Gun Armory and a few others...and those guns started at $11K! Hope some Pelican buys one and squeezes off some rounds for me! I've got to move!:mad:

If you were ever issued a 249, you wouldn't be excited. The only good thing about the 249 is the cyclic rate....and then only between jams. This has the potential to be the heaviest, jammiest POS ever unleashed upon America.

Seriously, I wonder what one does with something like that. After the first few days, blowing hundreds of dollars in ammo per minute would get old, no?

Why not just buy a MAC and one of the 5.56 conversion uppers...you could pull it off for about the same price and have yourself a fun little SMG

From what I heard, the internals to the semi auto 249 are entirely unique to prevent some redneck engineering machine gunnery. It would have been nice if they'd made the trigger/hammer the same as an AR so you could pop in an RDIAS.

I'm aware that the FA version of the Saw is somewhat jammy, especially if you use 30 rd mags in the magwell. I would think that FN would be able to build a semi-auto version that doesn't jam as much, especially since it's firing from the closed bolt position. Many of the external parts will remain the same (including the replaceable barrel) but yes, the internals will be different to satisfy BATF.

I think you guys are missing the point...there isn't anything practical about this but it is kinda cool to have a semi-auto version of the MG. Who here wouldn't want to snug up on the stock and squeeze off a 100 rd belt?!

HHI944- I think you missed that I'm in a communist state and can't even possess a 30 rd magazine, let alone a NFA weapon. I keep abreast of NFA prices and maybe someday will move to a friendly state. If I did that, I think I might go the H&K registered triggerpack route so that I could enjoy several FA guns with just one $$$$ outlay for the pack. An interesting sidenote is that machine gun armory's m249 uses H&K triggerpacks, so if you had a FA pack registered in the proper caliber you would be able to have a FA saw. That is the only way that you could get one FA, since it was introduced right around the time of the McClure-Volkmer act and I don't think there are any on the registry that are transferable. There are some M240 bravos on the registry though, but they are pretty rare. I saw one for sale about three months ago on subguns.com, they wanted $170k for it!

Wonder if Slidefire's designing a stock for it yet?
