Paging nostril cheese 1990 Volvo 240DL

JYL MB tread got me thinking, (crazy thinking) what I need to get to work is something comfortable to sit in traffic for two hours a day that gets good mileage... on a whim looking on craigslist at the usual suspects (Honda, Toyota, Nissan) and this pops up.
Would this make a good commuter?

Excellent Condition Volvo 240 DL 1990

look for a newer one to get ABS and an airbag
91's got ABS 90 may have an airbag but driver only

GL 's are a bit nicer dl is the bottom model trim

fairly eazy to turbo with parts from a 740 or 940

yes they are bullet proof

a 240DL will run forever. Just change the oil and timing belt.

Price is a little high, but looks to be a nice one.

Scott:

My 2 cents......

NICE looking example and if the description is true.....this is a nice find.

If you are at all concerned about the mechanicals.....you could always take it to a mechanic - perhaps the local Volvo specialist/dealer....for a PPI.

Tell the seller you want it based on nothing major found during the PPI and you're willing to give a good faith deposit - to the seller - to hold the car for you, so someone else doesn't snatch it way while you are making arrangements for the PPI.

And BTW....I wouldn't change a thing on it - keep it bone stock. These cars are awesome!

Get a PPI. The laundry list can be long. Miles?

A little concerned that the one rear wheel is different than the other three, drove by a Volvo close to home last night. Hopefully it is still there and I will check it out on my way home.

Thanks for the replies!

Edit to add: The post for the Volvo had been removed But I now have an interesting car to add to my list of possible DD's.

Just called a pal with an 86 740. Around 20MPG combined.

Just a data point.

20-25MPG. All depends on how you drive it.

Dirt simple to work on, everything is still available.

I think if you look up "deferred maintenance" or "impending transmission replacement," on Wikipedia, you see this picture:

One of the biggest issues with 240's is to be sure and check the wiring harness under the hood. The insulation on the wires will begin to crumble. Let the fun begin!

The harness at the hatch on a wagon fails too, time consuming to replace.

What's wrong with your Miata? I still think that's the best way to get to work cheap and in style. Nobody can see it is an automatic when you are going down the road!

My general opinion on Volvos is "the older the better" and no FWD ... but I never owned one!

Early 960s are great too, and they're also easy to work on.

Too reliable/simple? benz, volovo... worse mileage and more $$ to fix.
