Couldn't be happier with my new winch system for getting motors upstairs. And air compressors. With a front Lexan plate and some silicone on the wood ramp, it glided up to the top. Had to guess on the center of mass and it must have been within the range.


Took over an hour to strap properly including strapping it to the palette even though it's bolted to it.

I could have gone with pipes as rollers or 2 e- conduit rails screwed to the ramp. I went with Lexan sheet glued under the front, nothing in the back, and sprayed the ramp with silicone. It went right up with no drama.

That's how I got the double sized cast iron tub upstairs when I added a bathroom...but I just used a block n tackle with some heave ho :-).

I thought you had a wench set up out of a window or something??

Would have been quicker this time to have hired a crew to make it happen. But then you would have to call them in each time you want to move something big up or down the stairs.
Now you can do it your self when ever you want. And it will get quicker and easier each time you do it.

Thanks Scott. I'm starting my retirement early. Have always used 2x4s and a come-along, but getting the tumbler upstairs and a few motors, I decided I needed to make something real.

Finished it yesterday repurposing a lot of Al tubing from my trade show booth. Everything is under compression and mounts to the steel staircase.

The concern I saw was in that last pic. A flat pine 2x4 pulled in the middle will snap. The new wood is mostly water.

The aluminum is the weak link. 6063 most likely. It doesn't have much strength where the winch is mounted.

That's my concern as well. Glad it worked Shaun, but be careful.

I started to make a standalone one years ago but none of my calculations would pencil out and I didn't want to attach anything to the girders holding up the roof.



Hey Larry, now would I stupid enough to use 6063? :) This isn't Home Depot crap, it's all 6061 I got from my steel supplier. Given that I didn't get even a single creak out of this thing, I think it would be good for 1K lb+ without starting to worry. The compressor is only 500lb, friction was reduced significantly with the Lexan and silicon, and the whole system is braced incredibly well. When you grab the Al framing, it feels like you are grabbing the stair railing. The two rails holding the winch deflected about 1/8 from the wall while hauling it up.

Motors on dollies will be nothing for this thing.

Can't wait to wire in the transformer on Thursday.

I didn't want Sidney's concerns to go to waste, so I welded some 1/4" plate to a length of 2x2 DOM tubing, mounted the winch to it and hung it out the window using the building as a brace..

.023 wire is not the best for quarter inch steel, but the plate is on forever. Tube is about 8 feet long resting on two 2x4 platforms
