I read in Excellence some time ago about a Canadian company that used a 964 based car and created a street car with a center seat. Ugly looking thing, but made sense.

I bought the book about the McLaren F1, "Driving Ambition". It contains the original design sketches by Gordon Murray. I think the center seating was done for ideal weight distribution. It had a very good arrangement for 3 seats in a mid-engined car. I'm not so sure that center seating makes as much sense on a rear engined car, and the doors would be super hard to reach.
