Bee or wasp? This is what stung me

It is a wasp. If it is about 1/2" long it is commonly called a "Yellow Jacket".

Well, we must have a nest. I was out on the porch yesterday with a plate of salmon, and 2 to 4 of these guys were flying around my plate, landing, flying off with tiny bits of fish. Made it less relaxing to eat my dinner.

that's not a meat bee?

(really should be meat wasp) i find those things more annoying than scary.

you ever google that gigantic attack wasp from JAPAN? i think it is 2" long and just born with a effed up attitude. saw a documantary about them once. i visited japan and the thought was always at the back of my mind.

There are starting to show up around here. The good news is thy are very non agressive unless your are a cicada.

Timely thread. I recently started reacting strangely to bee stings. I have been stung may times in my life with nothing more than minor soreness. Yellow jacket stings hurt like a mutha but cause me no swelling...BUT...the last two honey bees stings I have received have caused significant local swelling lasting for days. This is an issue because I have bee hives. I was stung under the eye a few months back and it looked like I had been hit in the eye for a week...pretty puffy under the eye with discoloration for a week. I got hit a few days ago behind my left knee. I instantly removed the stinger and went on about the hive inspection. The next morning, my left calf was swollen considerable and by the end of the day there was a 1.5" difference in the circumference of my calfs. Never an issue of shortness of breath or body hives.
I think I will go see a doc and get a script for an EpiPen...just to be safe.

Can a persons allergic response change over time?

I would have thought somebody that owned beehives would be adequately covered to prevent bee stings? Some kind of bee combat coveralls? Yes?

My more memorable stings include the time a yellowjacket decided to crawl into my can of beer for a sip and then I took a sip. Wondering what the heck is this in my beer that is now between my teeth and inside of lower lip as I went to extract it POW he hit me on the inside of the lower lip. Ended drinking anything for the rest of the day. Think Cosby and the old Dentist skit.

Second was the red wasp that tagged me on the ear lobe. I thought I'd been shot from the grassy knoll.

It swelled up , red, hot sting was in my shoulder almost got into my elbow... big red wasp

Yes, I do have the "official bee keepers outfit" of veil, gloves and coveralls but, to be honest, I rarely wear it. Usually just in shorts without a shirt..kinda of a redneck honey thief.
Seriously, when I am just checking the hive, I don't suit up, but when time comes to harvest, I cover up and get the smoker.
I just can't figure out why the sudden change in my reaction to the stings.
