I've always loved this car.

I think that's the car that I remember reading about the build story and first Silver State Classic in the late 80s. Very, very cool

Afaik, Gottlieb's Big Red is a great (but tube-framed) car. To me, efforts more true to their roots such as Stielow's Red Devil are more interesting. ymmv.

There's getting be a LOT of really nice pro-touring type cars (similar to long hood hot rods) that could warrant a thread of their own here. Iconic styling meets remarkable performance in all aspects. Not sure they would be well received here though.

Yep, there was an article in HotRod magazine in 1988 or 1989 about the big red camaro in the Silver State Challenge. I remember reading that it was clocked in a "corner" at 200mph after having slowed down. I think it was clocked at 220 in a straight. I also think they had a tach for the motor and another for the driveshaft so they would know if there were getting wheelspin. There was a picture of them in front of a cop getting a "ticket" for going 70 in 1st gear or something like that. I'm sure that was a setup for fun.

I think I'm more of a resto-mod kind of guy. I'd love to have a daily driver that looked like an old classic, but had modern suspension and brakes and a nice fuel injected modern motor that got good mileage and had good AC.

I dig that they have kept the same BBS wheels since the car was built. It just looks "right" with them.

Me too. but the challenges are daunting.
I am a decent DIY guy, but getting too old & burnt out to carry on with the quest.
Beginning the project seemed like a good plan......but now I'm selling the car in hopes that someone out there will carry on with the project. Sure, it looks nice and goes like stink...... but it's no Big Red.

I do like the term "long hood hot rod".

I owned my last toy for around 15 years and modified it constantly until the last couple of years. I now lack the time and motivation to do it again. The builder of Big Red went to a tube frame for a reason.......the 50 year old design just doesn't make it. I see it as a NASCAR stocker with a 69 Camaro body.....not a bad plan....Oh,. to be 40 again.

I'm 70 now and didn't plan to live this long. Old guys get weird....some of us , at least.. I'm trying to deal with it before I'm institutionalized and loose my internet access..:D

JP--that's funny because my wife turns 40 in a few weeks. I passed it 8years ago.

I hope I am as interested in hotrods when I'm 70, if I am still around.

i'd give up all cars german for a crack at a 69 Z28 restoration..

i'm happy with a clone!! modern AC..modern drivetrain. maybe by the time i'm 70.

It may be more doable with a Camaro. I have a 65 Mustang. Ford may have had a better idea but you wouldn't know it when you dig into a Mustang. Tis a pretty SOB, tho .....
