Any Archery Hunters? I'm looking for input on sights

I'm currently shooting a 3 pin sight and I'm considering upgrading. I have a Bowtech General so not lightening fast. I'm looking for what others are using. I've been reading on the pendulum sights and they sound interesting. The Truglo pendulum seems to have a good reputation. Almost all of my shooting is from a tree stand. I don't do 3d and don't really intend to do so but I have read the truglo pendulum can be locked for ground shooting.

What are others shooting that you like. Pics would be great!

I have an old beater bow my buddy gave me and since I upgraded the sights, I can suddenly shoot it 50+ yards. Just like rifle scopes, I guess you have to spend some money on the sights!

I have a 5 pin micro-adjustable black gold site. Not sure what model, but the x/y are micro adjust while the pins are slide. It is nice and bright. Brighter than the target will ever be 30 minutes before/after sunrise/sunset (CA legal shooting light).

I do NOT think I like the single sights, as they require one more step when setting up for a shot. It may not matter in a tree stand, but I hunt from ground, so any additional movement I can avoid, I will.

That's my two cents! Good luck hunting!

I've read some good things on archery forums about the black gold sights. I'm figuring anywhere from $90 to $130 for a good sight. I have a good friend who swears by his IQ sight so I'm going to study those too. I'm not unhappy with my sight on the bow. This is really a result of buying my son a Diamond Infinite Edge and being disappointed with the sight that comes with the bow. I'm thinking I'll swap mine to his bow and "upgrade" mine.

Thanks for the input!

i'll field this:

(cracking knuckles)
i've gone thru a lot of sights. the one i stayed with the longest was a Spot Hogg, Hunter Hogg it - 7 pins. i had it at 20 yards to 80. VERY robust sight. did everything i wanted it to do. only thing lacking, was it didnt allow me to play at 100 yards. the pins size was 0.19" which is big and bright. some guys like the last two pins to be 0.10" which is smaller so they think they can put a pin point spot on a distant target and get more accurate. this is true to an extent. you have to have healthy eyes. the smaller pin (and fiber optics) are not only tiny, but less bright since the fibers gather less light.

NOW?? i have upgraded again. i wanted that 100 yard play shot. so i opted for a 3-pin sight with a slider option. this allows me 3 fixed pins for 20, 30, 40 yards.which i assumed covers 90% of the hunting situations. anything further..i turn a dial which brings the entire sight down allowing my lowest pin to be the "slider". there is a graduated tape that i dial in exact distances from 41 yards to 100. i made my slider pin 0.10" which is too small for me..i also made it a green pin which is my dimmest color. DUH!!! i can send in the sight to have them swap it out to a 0.19" RED pin..after hunt season i will do this.

my new sight is a Montana Black Gold Ascent out of their custom shop. the sight pictured above is also a MBG..but it is not a slider. MBG even has a 5 pin with a slider..maybe even a 7!

i think a fixed pin with a slider is a great compromise. hope it doesnt bit me in the butt. there can concieavably be a situation where i forget to slide the site back to the "home" position and i send an arrow over a 20 yard target. or i dont have time to slide out for a 50 yard shot..it could happen.

i think MBG is a great site. less fit and finish than Spot Hogg so it cost less..less fancy adjustment knobs, but i think that is fine..once adjusted i never mess with it.

the IQ sight i've never tried. my anchor is pretty good..i dont need the IQ thing. seems like another thing to look at during my shot routine. no thanks. keep it simple.

I was hoping for you to chime in old Vash .... I did not know about that "hybrid" approach. Sounds like the best of both worlds! Except for what you already mention - the potential to have it adjusted for a long shot when that buck steps out at 15 yards. But that's the same as a rifle sight sitting at 9x when you need to shoot 15 yards...

I am pretty sure my fixed sights are the "widow maker" model. Unfortunately no deer widows after my weekend out in B zone.

Never used this, but I've used pretty much everything else Trijicon makes and it's all fantastic

me too!! B-6 was lonely. my wife wants to go camping next weekend..she might not like the bow stuff coming along me and disappearing for hours on end.

i found a pond!! in the middle of sun scorched B6. with water weeping out of a crack in the rocks. tracks EVERYWHERE. sucked i found the water on my last day.

THAT trijicon sight is sick..but the single pin would cost me dearly..i just know it. expensive. i only know one guy that has it, and he loves it, but he doesnt bowhunt.

Everything Cliff said. I just got the Montana BGA in 5 pin. Bottom pin is 60...then everything else is on the slider to 110 yds. BTW...it would have to be PERFECT conditions to attempt a 110 shot for me. Just kinda like having it. I pulled this flash point red zone 5 pin off my bow...you're welcome to it.

thought about this. the pond is the steepest mountain (down) ever. you have to do that boot-skiing thing..where you just kinda snow plow down with your boots.

my wife doenst cuss,, she would learn.

Thanks for all the great input! I guess I have some more obsessing to do. I looked at that trijicon right up to the point where I saw the price HOLY CRAP that thing costs more than I have in my bow. I don't get out much past 30 yards with my shooting lanes. Even with my inexpensive truglo I group 3 in about a 1 inch circle at 30 yards. I quit aiming at the same target because I was breaking arrows or cutting a fletching targeting with my practice broad heads. I can't see a $500 sight making me much better.

I looked at an IQ today and wasn't really all that impressed. If you're gripping the bow properly you shouldn't be torquing it to begin with.

Jim,
I might send you a PM if I can't get this sorted out. It might help buy me some time so I can really do some research.

One comment I did not make on the gold sight earlier: It is very well built. Very sturdy and you can bump it into something in the field without it going out of adjustment or worse, breaking something. My old sights had fibers whacked and cracked the 3rd or 4th hunt I was on. Durability is high on my list as a broken site will have your hunt ruined, often after humping a mountain side all day ...

Montana Black Gold 5 pin ++

Hard to beat for the price. Local made in Bozeman MT. Would be my first stop. Great support also.

Trophy Ridge has / had some good products also unaware of where their products are made.
