New crate engine

My old hot rod engine has been smokin' a bit and rattling a lot lately, so decided to buy, first time ever, a new GM crate 350 c.i. long block.

Had been thinking about rebuilding my old engine which runs great except for the above two problems.

It has no history, not even real sure what it is other than a SBC 350.
So took the easy way out with this new engine with warranty et al.

Easy on the budget too. Will keep my old motor and probably re build it with a little more badass in mind for next Hot rod. Wont get the new crate for 4 or 5 days
so might be a while before getting it installed, see how it goes.

Here's a pic or two of the old motor, so hope I can make the new one look as good. Thanks for looking.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1442024097.jpg

WOW, A CHEVY 350!!!

Serously, where is the pic of the hot rod?

What kind of crate motor did you get? Just a base "Goodwrench" with 128 horsepower? ;) There is some bad ass crate motor stuff for sale, ready to go. I'd be very tempted! At least step it up to a 383 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hpe-hp94

+1 for the 383.

RANDY P 09-11-2015 07:09 PM

weird, it's awfully clean for a smoker. Normally you get all kinds of crap around the breather due to blowby, leaks up the arse, etc. etc.

SBC isn't known for oiling problems either. They are one of the best oilers in the biz.

PS 383 is getting up there, ZZ4 (350) gets my vote, enough TQ to move that light hotrod or any post 86 block local build with roller bosses- so roller cam and built at local hotrod shop by someone reputable, since it's not a DD I'd take my chances to save a few $$ and build it my way.

Put a flathead in her. ;)
.
I put a ported, polished, & relieved (mild Isky cam) flat head in my '29 Ford Town Sedan a hundred years ago. 3 Stom 97's in progressive linkage.
That sweetie idled so smoothly I could have put a glass of champagne on her.
Not as pretty as this one, however.

Well this IS my DD. . So with pump gas at $6.50/gal less is more when it comes to HP. I have a 454 I could use, and I'm saving up for a Hemi (in my dreams, probably)
so the basic 350 for now. This is a Chevy BTW, so that's the reason for the 350.

Well see how it goes, maybe I'll build up the existing 350 at a later date.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1442069473.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1442069665.jpg

Having something like that (hot rod flathead in a old ford) is on my bucket list!

I walked down to the coffee/grocery shop one morning and found this parked out front:

Motor arrived today, long block, so only need to bolt on a few things. Shouldn't be too much downtime with this one. Might look into a new intake and carb (or carbs)since it doesn't come with that, and would leave my old motor intact. Not a very exciting picture, although I'm looking forward to getting started on it.

That's a cool DD. Heh.

Should do a 327 4sp with a solid lift- wind the piss out of it.

RANDY P 09-15-2015 04:05 PM

PS I picked up a replacement GM L05 crate engine for $1.7K awhile back.

It's excellent quality- fired up on first turn, and been flawless since. I'd do it again if I needed a DD engine.

Great, good to know. BTW the 327 is my fav but they're getting a bit rare. I'm happy with these SBC as long as it's got a four inch bore. Also, this one was $2.4

Thanks

Uncrated and getting ready for paint

Also waiting on a new alum intake and a new quadrajet carb. Lotsa fun.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1442861246.jpg

What are you scooping? Kool Aid powder?

yellowperil 09-22-2015 01:21 PM

It's Nk21. Which is a fertilizer mix of Potassium and nitrate. I think it's mixed like it is to lessen the use of ammonium nitrate which in the wrong hands can be nasty stuff.

Arizona_928 09-22-2015 05:14 PM

Yeahhhhhhh don't mix with diesel ^^

Rot 911 09-23-2015 05:00 AM

Having worked on enough Porsches, including a 911 engine rebuild, $2400 seems like a great deal!

Sort of off topic, but

I tried to buy this El Camino over 40 yrs ago,(I was just a child) but the owner,
although quite nice just wouldn't sell. On the cusp of a major restoration, he said. Tried two or three more times but he would never budge. The car hasn't moved from that very spot in at least 50 years.

I could've made a nice cruiser with that car. Too late now, for me at least.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1443126923.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1443126987.jpg

yellowperil 10-04-2015 04:57 PM

Starting to come together now, waiting for new valve covers, got a new Qjet carb,
wont be too long now. Get the old engine out, overhaul tranny.

Should be cruisin' next week I hope. The Hemi just waiting as next project. Not mine, my friend's, I expect he'll be at this over the winter.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1444006397.jpg

I bet you're stoked! Can't wait to see it all together.

Can I ask why you decided to go with a Q-jet? Fuel mileage?

I always liked the look of the Qjet and mileage IS great. Also everyone else has holley or edelbrock, bad enough we all have SBC 350's, so I'll be a little different.

The block doesn't look too great right now, (my camera makes the orange look weird) but with all the ancillaries on board it should liven up a bit.

Actually it should look just like the old engine with newer shinier bits.

Thanks for lookin'

Ole '30's Chevy's

Hi, you have a very good looking old Chevy....Rare indeed. Due to all the wood in them was the reason that there are so very few of around; Bugs eating the wood, rotting and or due to an accident. To replace any of the wood was able to be replaced in that era as the tradesmen back then that could do it......With your new Chevy SB it just may make your machine creak a little:) ...A 454 -> Kindling :):)

Many years ago I had '34 2 door sedan which was dark blue with black fenders. The car was in very good condition. The fellow was killed in the war and it had been parked at their farm since..It had been hit on the left fender that included the 'A' pillar (wood wrapped with metal)

I had a good joinery shop make the piece of wood for the 'A' pillar which they were spot on with. All in all it cost a bit to fix it but I did get it at a good price due to the damage.

The nice thing about the car was that the paint and the interior were still in excellent condition....

History 101 on Old Fords and Chevy's:
The reason that all of the Fords were Hot Rodded was due to Henry's vehicles being an all steal car. You have one great machine!...Just watch out for pieces of flying splinters if you unfortunately happen crash it ...:):)

Bonnie & Clyde " loved" there '34 Ford for two reasons.

1. They easily went much faster than the Chevy's in-line six's Like very easy!

2. Henry's V8's had a proper oil pump whereas GM used only a splash system. Hence, when held the to the pedal for too long, they either seized up and or had a rod or two go through the block... BTW, GM used those 216 cu.inch splash system motors right up until 1954!... In '54 they had a 235.cu.inch as the standard engine and of course in '55 it all happened- A completely new small block 265 cu.inch V8!!

Take care and enjoy your neat machine!

yellowperil 10-06-2015 05:18 PM

Too late

yellowperil 10-14-2015 05:36 PM

all back in place and ready to go!

Also new front bumper made at this shop from scratch, also cleaned up the front grill and new blue bowtie. (I mention the bowtie because you can only change it when rad is all apart)

Engine kinda looks the same, which I wanted, but lots of new parts besides new engine. Rebuilt the rad too, and new carb, new intake. Same valve covers, and distributor. Runs nice. Be running it this weekend as break-in!

Hope you enjoyed it, a bit at least, thanks for looking guys.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1444872792.jpg

Got snow tires?

Porchdog 10-14-2015 05:52 PM

Is the Chevy bare metal? How do you keep it form just rusting away?

Here in PA everything rusts.

Hired a graduate from BYU who showed up driving his grandfather's 1960 F100. It had been sandblasted to bare metal in the desert. Fortunately we convinced him to paint it before winter.

yellowperil 10-14-2015 05:52 PM

This weekend, snow or not.

yellowperil 10-14-2015 05:56 PM

Not bare metal, mostly green primer, some original paint and some clear satin all over.

Seems to hang on pretty good, not getting any rustier.

Yellowperil, Looks great, thanks for the writeup! You're good for another 100000 miles!

(Any chance we can get a picture of your first burnout?)

My dad had built bumpers for a kit car of his that look very much like your new front.

Looks good! How is it running?
