Mouse in the house
 

We had a couple of house guests for almost a month. Mother in law and nephew were quite pleasant and were only here while their place was getting remodeled. We explained the rules of the house but of course they broke them on occasion. Main rule was do not leave any doors leading outside open and unattended. Reason is we back up onto an open field where there are critters, especially mice.

This morning, I'm on the phone in my home office and I see a mouse run into my little boy's bedroom. *****! My wife is going to freak when she finds out. Off to Ace Hardware I go for sticky mouse trap strips. Note to self - say no to future house guests.

I like the old fashion traps use a little peanut butter as bait.
Little rascals can get in via a hole the width of a pencil.

pro-tip: use bacon as bait. TIE it around the trigger.

The SNAP of the old fashioned traps late at night is much more satisfying.

In our crawl space, one of my traps went snap, and then went missing!:confused:

Peanut butter with a piece of dog food stuck on. Never had a clean, unsung trap.

Just get the right type of dog.

Years ago in a crappy rental I had the exact same thing happen though it was the larger rat trap version... Never found the trap.

I set two traps out; one on each side of a room dividing wall at work- went to check it the next day and saw the trap missing on the one side and thought that somebody took it- went around the wall and there was a mouse- one trap on his leg the other on his face. Now that's a bad day.

I like mechanical traps. They have nice ones now that are easy to set and clean. The glue traps are cruel and they can be dragging all over the house.

My dog kills rodents and is quick enough to catch them, but i would not want her to hunt in the house. Stuff would be flying - she's fast.

Can vouch for the wiener dog, wife and I have one her dog before we got married. We purchased a 100 year old plus farm house and rehabbed it, mice for a time were a way of life. I personally watched ours go after and catch a mouse. To this day all we have to say is where is the mouse and the dog goes to work looking and we don't even live in the old farm house anymore.

^I lived in a log cabin on 50 acres in VT for several years. We had a lot of mice. I declared war one evening I was trying to get to sleep and a couple were scratching around in the wall next to my bed, just inches away from my head. The ensuing couple weeks were a bona-fide blood bath (2-3 kills per night). My weapon of choice was the classic snap trap with peanut butter for bait.

On one occasion, the snap trap came down on the little guys shoulder instead of the neck. Poor thing dragged itself back to a hidey hole which was behind the slant-fin base board heaters. Managed to pull himself about halfway in the hole (couldn't make it all the way in dragging the trap along) and then expired. Problem was when I tried to pull the critter out for disposal, it was stuck halfway in that hole and wasn't letting go. I damn near tore the corpse apart trying to remove it...it was nasty.

Good to hear that classic traps are better now.

Had used the sticky paper for a while a long time ago.

I also had the "pleasure" of trying to drown one of them when they got stuck in a pail of water. Those damn things can last long underwater.

When I lived in PA, we had a constant battle in the fall as the evening became cooler. They would come in through the garage. I typically set 4 or 5 traditional traps with peanut butter. Half the traps would disappear. One day I opened the house door to the garage just in time to see a large weasel looking critter run out of the garage with a mouse and trap in its mouth. Wife never went in the garage again. Weasel is my hero.

Yes, mice can get in anywhere. It's unlikely the mouse walked in the open door. My guess is there's some crack or hole he used to get in from the outside. Keep in mind, if you have one, there's more.

My secret - regular spring trap with peanut butter bait with either - a nice crunchy Cheetos - or a nacho cheese flavored Doritos chip - broken into a small but enticing size.

Nail the trap to a rafter. Peanut butter. Fish in a barrel.
