Cycling shorts are stupid expensive.

Chit! I ride pretty much everyday. I only have two chamois ass-liners left and one pair of shorts. So I went shopping. How are padded shorts so expensive? Metro or not a like to wear knickers. I have a dumb knee scar that seems to be sensitive to the sun.

Even decent spandex is $90 ish.

Haha.

Descent shorts are 150 bucks and up. When I do spend time in the saddle, its a least a couple of hours, so shorts are very important to me. I like Sugoi or Casatilli shorts. 4-5 hours ride, my fat ass is ok with them. With cheap shorts, I am pulling and yanking on them.

Life's to short to ride with cheap shorts and cheap tires

I like the Pearl Izumi mid line 8 panel design, can usually get them for about $90 on sale. I buy four or five pairs at a time and wear a fresh one each day riding to work and then machine wash them- against the manufactures recommendation- sorry, I'm not hand washing my clothes. I still get a couple years out of them and they fit nicely.

I knew you'd say that, that's why I said what I said!

Seriously, get yourself a decent pair of Cinellis, or two; you will never go back to cheap-charlies. Life is too short!

(short! see what I did there?)

I bought $35 Nishiki biking shorts at Dick's Sporting goods and used a $15 coupon they sent me.

Well padded, and a wide butt pad for my wide bones but the boys aren't as well supported as I like.

They are super breathable, intended as an undergarment so you can wear regular running shorts over them.

Last time out I wore an unusually thick compression short by Nordic-Track sold at Sears with shorts over them (on sale less than $20). Better support for the boys and I didn't miss the padding all that much.

Either way I can't see spending more for the 1-2 hour rides I typically take.

This brings up 3 points:
1-buY bib shorts. they are better.
2-my first pair of shorts were a (gross) used pair from a cycling coach whos dog had eaten the chamois out of the crotch. He said- "you know- you really dont need to wear underware underneath these"- to which my reply was-" but, yes, I do..."
3-EBAY has a wonderful assortment of USED shorts if you need a deal!!!Go look!!! ugh.... SOME PEOPLE ACTUALLY BUY CYCLING SHORTS JUST TO POSE IN THE MIRROR IN- FOR REAL!!!

Mail order, the shorts are going on sale since the warm weather is ending. NASHBAR and the others also have house brands.

points 4 and maybe 5
4- more panels really are better
5- regardless of how many panels it has- the shape of the chamy reall does make a difference- this is a hit or miss scenario. I have some that fit well- louis garneau- and others that fit like a camel's toe infected with syphilis...

I still have several pairs of French made wool shorts I bought back when I started riding seriously in the late 70's and they are in great shape.......just a tad tooooo small! We used get told to wash then in Woolite, rinse with filtered water and drip dry after EVERY ride and they would last, guess so!

I used to really like my Performance Bike ultra ones until this summer I got a better pair of Peal Izumi's on clearance at REI. After one 3 hour ride I ordered 2 more pairs of the Peal Izumi's that were on clearance for just under $100 they are so much more comfortable. I did a 5 hour road ride in them and didn't have any numbness or chaffing. On the mountain bike I really don't mind the performance ones but usually our mountain bike rides are under 20 miles with more breaks.

Sugoi are my go to shorts. Great fit and durability.
I like their knee warmers as well. Important to keep those things warm in the cooler weather.
Their Firewall tights are great in cold/wet weather.

Because the store has to pay exorbitant rent/prop tax and cover costs?

Poop rolls uphill.
Bottoms up.
