Do ya think this will expose the diesel Cayanne to be included in this mess? Everybody at the Porsche dealership is very "mum" as to what happens next.

Why Worry???
If you notice how fast the top guys are resigning, the reason being that they hope to stop what may/could happen. The company may be out of compliance with the securities exchange commission. The worst case is that the stock could be delisted from exchanges. My fear is that this kind of capital loss could drive Porsche into bankruptcy...

Perhaps the VW strategy is truly the best of both worlds. If what you say above is true about pedals and steering, the car might switch to "clean map" sitting in traffic, which is exactly where you want it to be clean as a whistle, you don't care about drivability, and you are burning very little fuel. If it can switch to "un-clean" once you get moving again, you are back to greater power and fuel economy, which may cause a specific contaminant to rise, but comes with offsetting benefits in terms of burning a smaller overall quantity of fuel, and for a shorter period of time. But common sense and EPA regs have never gone hand-in-hand. |

VW Diesel
Don't own one at the moment, but if I did, I would high 5 VW for pulling one over on the EPA for so many years! And, if I owned one, I would not have the system software updated! Doing so will undoubtedly make the car slower and less efficient than it is now. I'm just sorry that they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar!

My head is spinning ...
The defective ignition locks at GM resulted in 174 dead and was punished by a fine of 900 million US dollars. At Volkswagen we are now talking about 18 billion US dollars penalty for faked emissions (not defective airbags, not defective brakes, ...). What a coincidence that VW launched the new Passat the same day. And what a coincidence that at the same time VW faces a process in Brazil for cooperating with the dictator IN 1964-1985! |
From Reuters
Factbox: Diesel engines and how VW's 'defeat device' worked | Reuters "VW'S DEFEAT DEVICE - The software switched on when the automobiles were being tested for compliance with EPA standards, turning off during normal driving to allow maximum engine performance. The algorithm used information about how the car was being steered, how long the engine ran and atmospheric pressure to "precisely track" the conditions that corresponded to a federal emissions test, according to the EPA." |
It's not like the EPA causes environmental disasters, covers them up, or wastes taxpayers money...
