Years ago I heard that it wasn't the information that you knew but if you had the aptitude to get that information.
I think that creativity plays a huge part in intelligence.

+1.....Reminds me of the old Bob Seger song...."I feel like a number, I'm not a number...."
Have no idea what my actual IQ is, but placing in the 99th percentile on apptitude tests" was "child's plays" for me....doesn't mean squat ;)

I have ZERO musical, artistic, talents whatsoever....balance is good too

But I CAN fish :)

First of all the situation of high iq and women. Women seem to like nerds. The 60's image
of big well muscled men is over for most women.

Even if a person has a high iq then it can come unravelled in PARF. It is the equalizer. Hi iq? I don't have that problem.

I got tested years ago and got a good number that I'm proud of. I don't like bragging (so I won't post it) but I consider myself extremely fortunate and like Stan Lee would say, "with great power comes great responsibility". Because of this I feel pressured to do more than probably most people do - to do my part in proportion to the gifts I have with respect to leaving the world better than I found it. I've been fortunate enough to be born with the mental skills to do a lot and I get disappointed in myself if I feel I'm not living up to potential. Probably a lot of others on here can relate - this seems to be a "right side of the bell curve" kind of crowd here, generally speaking.

That will get you much farther in life, eventually, than a high IQ.
It will bring you much more joy, peace, and love.

This is the truth, Don.

I've heard it said that one of the hardest things to do is to be honest with one's self.

Everyone has value....you just have to appreciate what yours is and embrace it....

IQ is a number assigned by a test. A test that measures some items of human cognitive ability but not all. I have a daughter who is truly a genius. She wouldn't score so well on an IQ test. I have two other children that are two to four standard deviations above the mean but I don't consider them to be genius.

IQ really predicts the performance someone will show at a university. It is a goofy, flawed, and grossly overused measurement. I would prefer people stop talking about IQ altogether. It isn't really a great measure of intelligence.

ben parrish 09-26-2015 05:57 AM

IQ is, in my opinion, both knowledge and the ability to to adapt that knowledge to to the task at hand.
I was tested in school twice..both times were within a few points of one another...highly gifted.
The real issue I see with this as I get older is, I now understand how stupid I really am.

:D -thanks for the laughs. (Scott too)

On topic.. Perhaps the IQ-knowing paradox is why young smart people drink etc. ...classic experiment with a twist: if we put IQ in a box along with some poison, we can consider the IQ both alive and dead at the same time. --Comforting for many.

if you pick a smart one
you have a better chance at smart kids

pick for big tatas
and not so much chance at smart kids

both my kids qualified for the gifted school class

Gogar 09-26-2015 09:33 AM

If you have to prove you're smart. . . . You're not.

And if a girl has to prove she has bodacious tatas ... well, she probably has bodacious tatas.

I beg to differ....but an arbitrary IQ number isn't proof :D

I may come across as a bit arrogant, but proving I was smart was a necessity for me to have had the career I had before I calling it quits.

It sure as hell wasn't my looks or people skills :p

A IQ test is a snap shot in time, taken repeatedly over time they are a pretty good indication of cognitive ability.

I view intelligence as the quickness with which one can grasp abstract and or complex ideas. There are a number of people on this Board who have more HP under the hood than I do, but then comes the utilization of that HP. I am of the opinion that most people have so much clutter in the form of unresolved issues that it acts as a distraction. In other words it is like having AC pump on a racing motor, it robs HP. If you can resolve your clutter you then have the capacity to focus your attention which acts like a turbo charger.

Then we come to the issue of neural plasticity, as an apprentice becomes a master craftsman's the configuration of the brain changes to reflect the learned knowledge. Thus an apprentices brain may be firing on synapse A while a master craftsman maybe firing either on synapse D or any combination of synapses A through D.

To me, IQ is and interesting evaluation that is best used to compare yourself to someone else. Hence, it is for validation. If you are content then what the heck does it matter.

IIRC, research has found that your EQ will determine your success in business and life more than your IQ.
