Iq
Tell me friends, if my hypothesis is stoopid: It's best not to know.
Take me, for example. If my IQ turned out to be lower than I think it is, of course I'm bummed. But if it turns out to be higher than I think it is, I'm bummed even worser. Knowing is a no win as far as I'm concerned. For me, ignorance of the matter is truly bliss. Hence the conundrum, if you get my drift. By not knowing my IQ, I can simultaneously consider myself an inspirational overachiever and a dismal failure. That seems a good strategery for getting through the day. The downside is I'll never really know which I am. Which is also the upside. Yup. Best not to know. Agree? |

Look, you can know and if it's high enough according to "some scale" then you can join and hang with the Mensa folks. But let me warn you, it's a bad place to meet chicks.

How on earth did the concepts of chicks and IQ get intermingled?
See what I mean? It's the chicks that matter. Not their IQ's. One's intelligence is a really dumb thing to know. Most of us would rather know chicks. Scott seems to agree. First point goes to ignorance. |

Based on my life's experience, what's far more valuable than a high IQ is self-acceptance.
That will get you much farther in life, eventually, than a high IQ. It will bring you much more joy, peace, and love.

I'm giving the point to ignorance. Ignorance is the home team so the score is 2-0.
However, the question was not if IQ is important or valuable. The hypothesis is concerned with whether or not it is best not to know what one's is. Don seems to say that one's IQ is not all that relevant so it follows, by implication, that knowing what it is, is also not relevant. 2-0. |

If you want to feel smart, take one of those online IQ tests. Big numbers are your reward!

2-1. But reluctantly.
If some people benefit from measuring their IQ, even if the test results may not be valid, would imply that knowing your actual IQ would be even more beneficial. But only if the number is high. |

IQ is not super useful in my opinion. It may be an indicator of problem solving ability to an extent. But there are lots of different types of intelligence - musical, mechanical, great fishermen, etc. When I taught many years ago, after a while I looked at people kind of as entities with multifaceted personalities/abilities/talents/ etc. Some had facets and sides of irregular proportions and were better at some thing than others. In a group of people, there is usually someone that can solve any certain problem or achieve things you wouldn't consider. I hope that made sense.

I'd gladly give up some of my IQ for a better memory.

The A students usually end up working for the C students.
