One of the more famous racers once said it must have been perfectly balanced because once it started spinning, it went on forever. Or something to that effect.

I learn something new every day. I did not know this thing existed. Looks like there are kit cars out there. That'd be fun over the run off the mill Cobra!

No drive shaft, kind of a mid-engine, 16 made, driver's legs got baked as the headers went OVER the legs.

Corvette, TVR Vixen, (Miniature) Daytona Coupe?

This was my favorite slot car that we had in the 60's! We had a big track and I would always have to have the Cheetah when racing with my three older brothers.

Daytona coupe and a clown shoe.

A car from when men were men and driving was about taming the beast, not the beast taming you with electronic gizmos! I love that the exhaust headers burned the driver's feet....like the original GT40 where the driver sat ON TOP of the fuel tank because that was the best spot for a full fuel tank to keep the weight distribution of the car. I love it!

Thanks for posting that article, I had never heard of the Cheetah.

Cheetahs at Road America 2014

There was a Cheetah Reunion at Road America for The Hawk vintage races last year. They had the Lester building inside turn 14.

I had not been aware of them until I read about the reunion at The Hawk.

Several of them even went into Elkhart Lake for the sports car Concours on Saturday.

Me too!

Thou they are rarer that hens teeth... a Daytona coupe (kit car) would be much more practical.

What is all that about headers touching the drivers legs/feet? Looks like they are outside the cab? And yes I know Cobras (and vipers) get uber hot.

masraum 10-03-2015 05:20 PM

Sitting on the rear axle would probably feel really weird. I know that when I first got my miata, I felt like I was sitting way out back and it felt odd.

Rednine11 10-03-2015 06:22 PM

The Cheetah is no joke guys, Its not something you're taking the kids to soccer practice in. that car does exactly what it was designed to do and that is kill Cobras. is it comfy no. cup holders no....uncomfortable, YES
faster than a Cobra dam right.

Thank you and I would LOVE a Lotus............since I cant have a Cheetah

rfuerst911sc 10-04-2015 02:26 AM

Isn't there an aftermarket company making Cheetah replicas ? I thought I read online somewhere that a very accurate replica was being built. I always loved the look of them.

Nickshu 10-04-2015 05:39 AM

I posted this over on the Corvair forum where a bunch of vintage racer guys hang out. There are apparently quite a few of these Cheetah's running on the vintage racing circuit. Sounds like most of the drivers have put a lot of effort into modifying the suspension to make it easier to handle around the track. Here's one looking really bad-a** in Gulf Blue that one of the guys recently raced against:

Steve Carlton 10-04-2015 09:26 AM

I'm feeling ambiguous about it.

Rednine11 10-04-2015 07:34 PM

The "Aftermarket" company making new Cheetahas is NOT an Aftermarket company at all and the cars are not Replicas its a continuation of the production run. Its Bill Thomas himself. the original designer and builder of the car. You can buy a turn key car built on original blueprints or a modern updated version using mostly new Vette parts from what I understand.

aigel 10-04-2015 09:57 PM

Thanks for all the pictures. Those cars look so 60s, it is awesome.

Any link to a "new" one of these? What does it cost? I'd like to see how it feels to drive a mid-engine car from the wrong end. Must feel really funny!
