Any experience with Trane furnaces?
 

I've got a couple of old Lennox Pulse Air furnaces and wanted to get a tune-up (with spark plugs and flame sensors). There were too many false starts with moaning and groaning, but the replacement parts are no longer available even from the aftermarket crowd.

I've got gobs of new spray foam insulation and looking to make an investment for both myself and my tenants(who pay their own heat).

Those old Pulse Air beasts have performed well but after a few decades+ are ready to be replaced.
My A/C is also 26 years old and I only run it fully a couple times a year just to keep the oil and seals lubricated. On a raised slab and covered in winter.

Costco sells the Lennox package, but I've read mixed reviews about the new ones.


The new 2 stage Tranes look to be 97% efficient and spend 80% of their time in low-circulation mode.
The salesman is from a reputable local company.
Are there any downsides to this brand?

I've had a Trane 80% for about 3 years and it's been fine so far. I don't suppose I have anything to compare it to. Before that I had a Gravity Octopus.

I might have got a 90% or something but you have to have a drain or a condensation pump. Since I added AC I have a condensation pump now and wish I had just got the more efficient Trane.

We have a high efficiency Trane furnace(not the highest efficiency but up there) and it was installed ten years ago. No trouble at all with it. More expensive than Lennox but worth it for peace of mind. No a/c but heat is more even in the house. Digital thermostat.
Would do it again if had to.

Seeing that I sleep near the furnace I just have a thick filter(5 inches) in it rather than the electrostatic one which snaps and makes noise.

I just had a Lennox installed this summer. Costco quoted $9000 for a full hvac system. Had a great installation done for $4k. A/C works great, haven't tried the heater yet. :)

I also replaced the interior ozone generator with a paper filter as well.
(It is difficult to find the 25x20x5 filters in the box stores though.)

Also added a UV light in the return vent to help destroy micro-allergens air uv lamp uv aire air purifier uv lamp ultraviolet lights hvac uv lights air duct uv lamp air uv light bulb air conditioning

I installed 3 Trane furnaces in my house 18 years ago and haven't had any problems with them. Not the same as what they sell today, so I can't help you with the new ones.

Yes. Trane is top notch. I actually just had one put in my house today to replace the original furnace to the house. We've installed Tranes in prior houses too. My HVAC guy likes Trane especially because they're robust and pretty simple, so when they do go down they're easy to work on. When our old furnace started to go out last spring we just told him to get us the best value for the money and he came up with Trane. He also claims they have the best current technology for the product.

I will say I see more old trane equipment when viewing houses than about anything else. I've seen several 20yr old units that looked to be in good shape and still sounded good. I looked at one house with a 15yr old unit that was so badly rusted and corroded I couldn't make out a brand name on it. I was shocked that it looked that bad given that this is AZ, stuff usually lasts forever here if its not made of plastic.

3 of our 4 units are Trane - installed 13 years ago. We've owned the house for 3 years now - no issues yet.

I just about to replace a 16 year old Trane furnace due to a board glitch. The replacement board and combustion air blower was half the cost of a new furnace.
Installing a York 96% two stage variable blower.
Why York? Pretty high reliability reports and received the best deal from the wholesaler.
These are now replaced more like appliances rather than the 20-40 year furnaces of yesteryear.

Edit: I would have considered another Trane furnace if I could have gotten it at the same price point.
