they are indeed a pretty car.

I can tell you, that is a damn fine FD. Surprised Mrs Seahawk did not keep it.

The scratch on the back bumper cover is from the foot pegs on the Harley that Paul rode into a ditch. It was parked behind the car in the garage. I think that leather will clean up pretty well with a little leather conditioner. It just looked really dry.

That was a magical time in sportscars (pre-SUV boom). You could choose from either the 300ZX twin turbo, 3000GT VR-4, Supra Turbo, or this RX-7. And those were just the Japanese offerings.

Early-to-mid '90s --> 964 = peak Porsche. Nuff said. :)

I believe that you are stretching the definition of "supercar" by including any RX-7 in the category.

Not at all, supercars were defined by the ability to top out at 150mp/h or more

She isn't really a car gal. She tried but to her performance is secondary to utility with a bit of go. That and she prefers the 560: Ironically, the car she has driven for almost ten years we bought from Onewhippedpuppy, her 2003 4Runner Sport. She bombs in that thing.

We are a cult of two. I'm looking at either a Jeep or another 964 Targa to replace the 560 when it is time.

One last thing. The RX-7 is a clean piece of design, really quite something when you spend some time with it. I am not sure what a Super Car is, but I can tell you I have never driven faster with ease.

Driving the RX-7 occasioned more comments from teenagers up to thirty year-olds than did the 356 or any 911 I have had, at least here in Southern Maryland. The 560 comes close oddly enough, but with a more mature crowd:)

I was shopping for a FD when I stumbled into the 944... not sure if that was a good thing or bad... still miss the 944.

Productive day today, the seats are out and sitting in the sun with Leatherique, the door panels are off and disassembled, and the dash is torn apart. All of the scratched plastic parts are torn down for refinishing, I'm going to have a detailing friend do a matte finish carbon fiber wrap on the door trims and dash panels. It's probably getting dropped off (sans interior) with another friend on Sunday who is going to take care of it getting painted. Should look very different in a few weeks!

Damn, you don't waste any time!

Of all the various RX7 models these are the best IMO. They're much better than the later 4 door version and I think these will age better.

Good luck and enjoy.

Current status.

Looking good, and looking forward to the progress.

My '87 Supra Turbo was that....FAST for it's day, and yes indeed, it could ;)

Nice score Matt!

onewhippedpuppy 10-14-2015 12:50 AM

I drive the 951, right now it's sharing time with a 2014 Roush Mustang as my fun driver. I won't keep it though. Despite really liking the 951 it has some serious turbo lag, I greatly prefer the RX7 sequential turbos that nearly eliminate lag. Once you get into the boost, the 951 is definitely the faster car.

Steve Carlton 10-14-2015 08:07 AM

I remember being thoroughly impressed when I drove one of those RX-7s when they came out. Ran like a scalded cat!

onewhippedpuppy 10-14-2015 03:05 PM

The seats turned out really well, Leatherique is fantastic stuff. The driver's side outer bolster could still use some dye but it's not half bad now. Car is off for paint!!!

Looking real good. Leatherique is amazing. Presuming you are staying with the factory silver (which is still a great color).
Your mentioned upgrading the cooling, but do you plan to do the full suite of reliability mods?

onewhippedpuppy 10-14-2015 06:00 PM

Absolutely, factory silver.

I plan on doing the coolant, lower temp thermostat and fan switch, EGR delete, air pump delete, and down pipe. On the fence about upgrading the radiator, the current one only has 5k on it. Planning on a true cold air aftermarket intake that relocates the airbox and ducts the intercooler to increase airflow. Finally I'm still looking at options for upgrading the oil cooler, the R1 style dual oil coolers are $1k.

My overall theme is reliability upgrades, very mild performance upgrades, a few unique JDM goodies, and enjoy. I've already ordered a Nardi 3-spoke wheel like the Japanese market Spirit R, and I'm shopping for the newer JDM tails and a back seat.

Perfect. How is the rats nest of vacuum hoses? Pretty good I imagine with the newer engine.
With those mods, the car is going to be sweet. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
