We sold oil for $.99 a quart, quite a markup and profit opportunity for the owner, Marvin Windrow. Now, Mr. Windrow was a really good mechanic but was a bit lacking in other areas. Once, having sold a woman four quarts of oil for her Caddy, I sprinted to the office and reported my big sale to him. Grabbing a pad and pencil, Mr. Windrow went to work. When I told him it was $3.96 he looked at me in disbelief and bent back over his pad. When he'd finally finished he looked at me again and exclaimed (very loudly, as he was quite hard of hearing, and in his very thick hills of Tennessee accent) "Nines!!! How do you do that with all those nines!!!"

Poor guy, I never told him, simply continued to have him believe I was some sort of kid genius.

You are assuming he knows what and where the decimal point is.... and by shifting it AND taking 10% per your recommendation - he'd have the wrong number.

You either know the rules, or you understand the relationship of numbers (or quantities). I personally am pretty good at the relationships and can calculate almost anything within reason almost instantly. I was thinking about this the other day... human society is really all about math. Everything in our world is described mathematically. Without knowledge of numerical relationships, people are pretty much going to be at a severe disadvantage in life.

All the while I lived in Costa Rica the sales tax was 10%. Each and every sales person I ever dealt with had to get out the calculator to get it.

I took my Daughter and her two friends to the Pumkin Patch over the weekend. While they were a little to old for the majority of the stuff there, they had fun reliving what it was like when they were 5...that was only 7 years ago!

While there, I bought them some lemonade. Why I cracked at $3/glass has everything to do with my Daughters blue eyes.

The kid says "$16"

I said, "Hmmm try again"

He says, "ya, 4 drinks, $3 each, $16..."

I turned back to the girls who were smirking. All three are pre-AP with straight A's.

I said, "actually it would be $12 right?"

He said, "oh ya, $12 sorry"

So I give him a $20 and he give me back $7.

"Your messing with me huh?" I said.

He looks at me and says "What? I ain't messing wit you."

"OK, the drinks are $12, I gave you a $20, that's means you owe me $8...and 4 drinks right"

Kid gets a stupid grin on his face, "Oh ya, I see what you did. Yup, $8."

I gave the girls their drinks and my Daughter is laughing to her self. She looks at me and says "Why? What is so hard about multiplying and subtracting?"

To make matter worse, the lemonade was horrible and the cups smelled like mold. Lessons learned.
