^^. Back roads have become my routes of choice since driving my motorhome in the last couple of years. It's tough to be a slower moving, large vehicle in the crazyness that is so common in heavy traffic at high speed On the freeways/ interstates.

Living in Hawaii on the outer islands for nearly 40 years didn't help me keep up with the changes on the highways here on the mainland. The density, speed, and attitudes
Of drivers take some getting used to. And frankly I'd rather not have to deal with it when such a good alternative is available.
Back roads are usually slower to get from A to B but what a different experience .
Interesting scenery at speeds that you can enjoy them, nice little towns, much more human interactions with people along the way. And mostly light to no traffic. Too good to miss.

Cheers Richard

I have made it a sport to NOT drive on the interstates if I have the time. I have driven across the country with less than 10% of the trip on an "I" series road.

My son is in the last year of college in Lexington, VA, hard by I81.

I have taken every road other than I81 to Lexington, some magnificent roads. But when I have to due to time, back on the not so super slab.

Same here. They're all pretty dangerous and, yes, people ARE stupid! Around here, we frequent I-95 and I-40 quite a bit.

People are stupider than anyone.

I take back roads when possible. A few days ago I had to get from Ft. Walton Beach, FL to the Atlanta airport....I could have went out of my way and taken freeway most of the trip. Instead, I stayed on back roads 2/3 of the distance, getting on the freeway at Auburn, AL...My route was the same time, less miles and traveled thru rolling hills, new pavement, and interesting little towns.....

We're amateurs in our buffoonery compared to drivers in the Middle East, especially the wealthier ME countries. THAT's an interesting place to drive...
