I am on these guys mailing list. They get a lot of interesting wines, and have been very honest over the years.
These are mainly domestic, mainly west coast wineries..

Eno's French & Italian red wines are not that impressive. Except: The 2008 Nervi Gattinara is a Best Buy at $29.00 but only if you are prepared for 5+ more years of cellaring.

Cellaring in the bottle? I was under the impression that once bottled aging stops. Do I have that wrong?

Yes, but . . .

It depends upon the grape, the wine maker & the storage environment. Many wines are made for immediate consumption but some grapes – notably better bottles made with Cabernet, Nebbiolo, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir etc – will change in taste, smell & color with bottle age. Have you ever noticed a puckery mouth taste when you take a slug of a young red wine? That’s tannins, which will gradually change in the bottle & given enough time, leave a smoother taste with more complex background flavors.

The Gattinara I referenced above comes from a tiny sub-region of Barolo in Northern Italy. It is made with the Nebbiolo grape, which is notorious for its need for long aging. After a young fruit bomb tannin-heavy stage, a good Barolo shuts down for years when it will be a very boring drink. When it finally opens up again, you are rewarded with a brickish colored smooth drink with great flavor that barely resembles its youthful phase.

Lots of reading on the subject on the Internet.

Just ordered some, thanks. Here's a brief description I found.

If you are ordering wine online, let's not forget our own Don Plumley.

Best

Do you have a link? Does Don own a vineyard?

imcarthur 10-23-2015 08:09 AM

Don is partners in Soliste. They grow Pinot, Chardonnay & Syrah. Very good wines btw. I have sampled the Syrah & a Pinot & I have one of their Pinots in my cellar that I got from Don earlier this year.

LOVE Spring Mountain...and that '87 was built to last as you found out.

BTW, did you know that the Spring Mountain Vineyard & Winery were the backdrop for TV's Falcon's Crest??

Hysterical when you think about it.

It was very very special, that I can say. So smooth, but complex and elegant. I found Spring Mountain some 15 years ago on a great date, we closed the restaurant, had two bottles of an 86. Bought a lot after that, fell in love with the wine...it's exactly what I want a cab to be. With this 87 nearly gone (saved some for an aging bone-in ribeye), all I have is one 97 Reserve left.

Fun fact, didn't know that. Falcon Crest, so long ago now.

Thanks Les and Ian for remembering Soliste. SmileWavy

There are a number of "flash sale" and aggregation sites out there now. Some have real finds, some have wine that a winery simply needs to move. A friend put together this site: SommSelect. Most wineries now sell direct to consumers across the US - you can access small producers, unique wines, etc. However, finding them is the trick. If you know of one interesting producer, then see what events they participate in, and look at the others. For example, West of West.

For French (and Italian) wines, my go to source is Kermit Lynch. He blazed the trail for many small producers, opened eyes to Chauteneuf du Pape, etc. Full range of wines for any budget, not a bad bottle there.

As for Soliste, we have an online store, plus wines available by allocation. Here are a few writeups if you are interested:

The Dail Meal: 101 Best Wineries in America - Soliste #45
International Wine Report Top 100 Wines of 2014: 2012 L'Espérance - #6
Soliste: The PinotFile Winery of the Year

At the end of the day, my advice about wine is very simple: "Love what you drink, drink what you love."

Not on Pelican much any more, but always happy to chat about Wine.

I am glad you caught the thread, Don. That L'Ambroisie is still resting peacefully. ;)

We bought bottles of wine in Buenos Aires a couple weeks ago for about $1.30 a bottle. Not bad at all. I'd like to have a bottle of Don's some day. That would be nice.
