Acorns!!

I have two oaks in my backyard and am accustomed to the yearly acorn shower. But this year is insane!! Walking through the yard is like ice skating as the acorns have carpeted the ground...twice!

Too bad I have no practical use for all these acorns.

Anyone else see a difference in the quantity of acorns this year?

Yes, a bumper crop of acorns..

The squirrels that live in my yard are quite happy this year

and gravity has a funny way of making those little folkers hurt, when they strike your head (just randomly falling out of a tree)!

they are everywhere here. the lack of rain made them tiny in my area. tiny. hopefully this means the turkey can swallow them, and we have a huge flock of birds.

i am going sunday to a property to see if the acorns are bringing anything in. looking for something in particular that taste like bacon...and pork chops!! been a while since i yanked my bowstring back on a nice shoulder roast braising in a wine and apple juice reduction.

I too have a ton of acorns in my yard and did some research - every few years oak trees have what they call a mast crop. This varies by the species of oak - but this year brings a convergence of mast crops of several species of oak trees - hence the multitude of nature's marbles all over our yards...

I remember about 8 years ago we had an oak tree. That tree produces acorns. Anyway with bare feet it was tough to walk on a carpet of dried acorns. So I cut the tree down. Of course oak is the toughest wood to chop. Got the tree down and don't miss those dried up acorns.

It's hickory nuts here and yes, there is a bumper crop this year. I've had to park my cars out in "back 40" behind my garage since mid-September. They dent your car like hailstones.

That is the last thing we need around here. Flocks of 200 birds going through cornfields is pretty devastating. The largest flock I saw recently is down to 50 or so birds. They do, however, make lots of noise for us during deer season.

Not too bad around here compared to the last two years. Now I have a zillion tiny oak trees and chipmunks, and squirrels and turkeys and deer and ...
