I came across something fairly shocking to this gearhead while reading an article about cold-war spy stuff.

Although Gordievsky has written that he climbed into the trunk of one of the cars, a former CIA officer says he actually crawled into a space in a specially modified Land Rover. Had the Russians examined the car, they would have seen the hump on the floor where the driveshaft would normally be. But this Land Rover’s driveshaft had been rerouted through one of the vehicle’s doors, the former CIA officer says, so that Gordievsky could fold himself into the hump, in effect hiding in plain sight.

I'm trying to picture routing of a driveshaft through the door, essentially down the side of a vehicle, and the mental image isn't pretty. I'm guessing a slew of cv joints, and just not accelerating or travelling too quickly?
