I've seen a coyote trotting down the middle of the street next to my house at 10:00 am. In the darn city. They come from the Santa Ana river trail that's a block away, usually at night.

My dog is completely blind and deaf but he still has his sense of smell. He normally loves using his doggy door but there are times when he absolutely refuses to go near it.
We figure that means there's a yote in the area and he's picked up the scent.
He wouldn't stand a chance if a coyote caught him outside.

Coyote tang aside, I got some old game cameras out of storage and set them around the farm to increase my coverage.

I don't hunt (birds and ground hogs are the exception) so unless my son is home the older cameras gather dust. I really do want to see if the Coyotes are tracking the stable. So far, nothing. Usual stuff, deer, squirrels, me, the dogs, etc.

This one showed up last night. Good looking Fox. I forgot what a hoot game cams can be.

As much as I love the still pics, the glowless Moultrie that followed me home from Gander Mtn is simply awesome in 90 sec video mode. Had mine out when Apple/pear trees were bearing a couple months ago....just totally cool videos of deer social interaction and other critters with awesome sound too SmileWavy.

Absolutely! I have asked Santa for a little love this Christmas...

Coyotes are getting to be a real issue all over the country. We have a farm in South Georgia. My dad has spent the last ten years and thousands of dollars developing it from a working farm to basically a wildlife management property. Acres of corn, millet, winter wheat, peas and other grains are planted for the quail, turkey and deer. We hunt the property selectively to maintain a healthy ecosystem. We have resident bobcats, hawks and other predators that help keep the small mammals, snakes and wounded animals in check.
A few year back, the Coyotes started showing up more and more and the small game like rabbits and quail have basically disappeared. We now have a standing rule that all Coyotes are shot on site. We see quiet a few on trail cameras but it is not often that we see them in daylight.
This one was taken by a friend two weekends ago...never saw him before on a cam. For reference, the buck in the photo was 195lbs...the Coyote was a HUGE male.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446400911.jpg

You sure that's a coyote? It doesn't look like any I've ever seen.

Btw, on the topic of trailcams, My Bushnell Trophy cam is still the best I have owned. But there again I don't go much over the $150 range for a camera either.

vash 11-16-2015 01:16 PM

That is a black coyote?!

Any more pics?

That may be a melanistic coyote.
Rare color variation,due to melanin.

Taken on my property in Milam County, Texas.

Seahawk 01-01-2016 08:32 AM

I am guessing Bobcat?

That is very cool.

The coyote has not shown up on any of my, or my neighbors game cams...lots of Red Fox and deer.

Jolly Amaranto 01-01-2016 09:16 AM

Yes, a bobcat. I am still waiting for a cougar but doubt one will ever make it this far east without getting shot. There is only so much room out in Big Bend National Park in West Texas so the young cougars usually get run out of the park by the older established cats. They don't usually last long after they leave the park.

We also have rabbits, squirrels, opossum, fox, skunks, coons, bobcat, rats, owls, red tails. They are all just doing their thing and except for the occasional rat invasion, don't bother me. I was walking my dog last night and a coyote crossed 10 yards or so in front of me. My dog is 50 lbs and I am pretty ugly and menacing so he just went on his way. Sometimes a cougar or black bear will come into the neighborhoods but it's pretty rare.

Once in a while we see a loner coyote that looks unhealthy and is actively hunting mid day. They will sometimes approach and act aggressively. We let animal control handle those since they may be carrying disease. They set live traps and either relocate or euthanize based on their health condition and threat to humans.

Used to live west of Sapphire and one street N of Thoroughbred. Had a 63 lb Airedale where nothing would come in that backyard that she wouldn't be on top of. One day she was out front playing with a young Dobie that was 10 lbs heavier and she was running that dog. Fast, agile, strong, fearless and smart.

Her favorite past time was rats.

One Sunday morning at the stop sign at 19th and San Antonio in Upland, a momma raccoon and her two little ones crossed in the cross walk right in front of my car. Where upon crossing they disappeared into the critter freeway storm drain opening.

If I lived on some acreage I would have 3 or 4 Airedales and nothing would come around. One of my neighbor lady's uncles grew up on a ranch in Colorado in the 1920's where they would hunt Bears with a pack of Airedales.

Ha. I literally laughed out loud for more than a minute.

Had 'em in my yard when I lived on Mulholland near Coldwater. Dozens of deer, a few raccoons and one bobcat. Too wily [see what I did there?] to be tagged as I drove, I did see plenty on the raceway, and wouldn't have hesitated to take one out.

Jolly Amaranto 02-26-2016 03:56 PM

I knew these guys were out there as I hear them all the time. Finally picked up a few on the camera.

Saw 4 deer yesterday as I interrupted their mid day nap....think I'll put my game cam back out. But now I want a fish cam ;). I saw the biggest dang turtle I've ever seen in my life (out in the wild) leisurely swimming in one of my ponds...the thing was huge, and though turtles are VERY human adverse and crafty, I can't believe I've never seen it before...body appeared to be maybe 2'+, and stretched out head to tail! it looked maybe 5' long...and that ain't no fish story either ;)

Jolly Amaranto 03-13-2016 05:30 AM

Jerome that is an extremely rare photograph of a wolverine. About ten years ago I was hiking with my neighbours near Jasper, Alberta on the Skyline Trail and Barry my neighbour spotted a wolverine chasing a marmot(like a gopher) amongst a pile of rocks about 150 yards away. Apparently according to a documentary I saw(PBS I think) a wolverine can cover many miles a day. Looks like in your pic it is following a well travelled highway....

I said "Holy S*** that no FN dog" Seconds later a Animal Control van crossed in front of me followed by a cop car, in hot pursuit of said "dog"

The things that struck me were A. how long its torso was B. how beautiful its coat was C. how in the f did it make to 119 and Wentworth?

Back in '08 the CPD chased and shot down a mountain lion on the north side.

It is a rare photo, but I have to confess that it wasn't taken by my camera. My neighbour's son-in-law is doing global warming research in the far north, and this camera was set up to observe some weather related phenomenon when all the creatures seen put on a show. I have a bunch of photos of his showing a broad variety of animals, including the wolverine, wolves, etc.

The photo above of the two interacting deer came from the same neighbor's back 40. Since there is strong cougar evidence around here lately, I'm tempted to set up a camera also.

Jerome74911S 03-13-2016 08:11 AM
