Slight changes, huge difference

My wife and I have new Samsung Galaxy S6 phones. She uses hardly any apps, with the exception of What's App. Me, news junkie, I have several news, plus lots of other stuff I tried. End result, I am lucky to get 8 hours out of the battery, she gets 36.

I went on a campaign to eliminate apps and unused settings. Gone are the Economist and Preview of the NYT, and lots of little apps play store reloaded, that I do not use. I also changed some account settings to not check and sync things I don't use (Google docs, etc.).

Result: 3% drop per hour.

I have a feeling some of these little apps check stuff all the time, and keep using WiFi all the time, killing battery life.

Location services is a huge drain. Turn it off for anything you don't need it for - which is pretty much everything.

I use mine for the school on line app, email, text messages from the kids/grand kids/ great grand kids and best of all read e-books. The iPhone 6+ is large enough to read easily and I just finished the whole series by Frederick Forsyth and a couple months ago went through the whole "Jack Reacher" series. I convert the epubs to PDF files with Calibre and email them to myself, then read the attachments.

let me know when you can block the auto updates.

mine just updated and i HATE it!!!

its bad enough getting a new phone and having to deal with how it works but to get an update forced on you that makes EVERYTHING worse in how it works really pisses me off.

Have you tried Flipboard yet?

My favorite aggregator, can dispense with a bunch of the individual outlet specific apps.

Fully customizable in terms of what content feeds you want it to pull.

Set camera for 4K filming. Get huge memory card. Brilliant quality for a phone.
I have the S5. Won't do the S6 for a couple different reasons. They removed the water resistance rating. Filming underwater is fun.

Yep, using Flipboard, but more on my Tablets. I really don't read that much news or even facebook, on my cellular. Facebook sync is now off.

The issue was some of the apps were constantly going to the server and getting updates, causing power usage.

After 6 hours today, with 15 minutes of voice usage added in, I have 68% battery left. These changes have made a huge difference.

The updates I'm talking about are similar to the automatic checking of e-mail. It check the news server to see if there is new news.

When I had an Android phone, I turned off data when not in use. I got 3 days on standby with no calls.

Clear your cache frequently. Go to Storage, press Cache, press OK to clear it. I often have 1-4 GB of cache junk. Phone runs much more smoothly after clearing it. Beyond me why Android doesn't do this automatically every 7 days or something. No battery life benefit but memory and speed benefit for sure.

LOL! I love to throw this fact out to Apple users, they are often dumbfounded. Both are good platforms but Android surpassed Apple in market share for smartphones years ago. It's amazing to me how many apps are still Apple focused when they are a small slice of the market. For app makers building for both platforms, why bother for Apple? My guess is maybe a more affluent demographic has Apple phones? Not sure but I think that is changing. I think the Apple Pay vs. Android Pay war will be a game changer (in Android's favor) in the coming years.

Google is going for india. They have a HD 5" quad core phone which is selling for $100, and it runs Marshmallow.

Apple has a hold on the US market, because we ARE more affluent. It is a status symbol.

Samsung has the right idea on the pay system. Forget NFC, use the mag stripe reader. Compatible with 90% of readers as is.

I just bought an LG V10 (upgraded from an LG G3, which was an upgrade from a Samsung Galaxy). I'm not loving the battery life on this thing...
