GPS app for Android phone
 

I have an LG Optimus G Pro Android phone, it works great. It has a built in GPS app that works great for typing in an address and setting your road route. But I'm looking for a GPS app that would allow you to tell the phone " you are here " and then get you back to where you were. So as an example you are on a large lake you've never been to. At the boat ramp you tell the app you are here. Go boating for several hours now ask the app to point you back to where you started. Or you are going hiking/hunting in unfamiliar area. You tell the app where you are exiting your vehicle and several hours later ask the app to get you back to your vehicle. Does such an app exist ? Or does my current app possibly have this feature ? My phone has the Google map app.

I just drop a pin in Google Maps and txt myself the pin location using the Share function in Google Maps. Not sure if that's the easiest way to do it, but it works for me.

OK explain how you do this like I'm a 10 year old :D Maybe I can use my existing app to do what I want. Thanks for the reply

I'm not certain of this but I think google maps has a tracking function that will record your routes and you can reverse them. The other thing maps does is saves your recent searches so if you entered a search for the location you want to go back to, if you're somewhere and want to go back to the location you were at, just enter the drop down list of places you've been and select it. It will calculate the route if you allow your phone to find your current location.

If you just want to see where you went, how about a jogging app like runtastic? It shows my path on a map, but beware, it sucks up the battery.

Google maps

1. Open Google maps - it should show your current location
2. Touch and hold that location on the screen.
3. A white box will appear at the bottom of the screen that describes that location.
4. Touch the white box.
5. The white box will expand giving you a couple of choices.
6. Save will save the location to "Your places." Share will allow you to text or email that location to someone.

To access the point your saved in "Your places" in step 6:

1. Open Google maps.
2. Touch the 3 lines that appear to the left of the search field at the top.
3. Select "Your places."

Thank you !!! Any idea if you can change the name of the saved location ? I'm going to try this just walking in a park to see if it works before venturing into the woods or onto a lake. Hopefully it will work.

Strava app on your phone. Use it all the time to dirt bike and snowmobile. Will even track when out of range of cell service.

Yeah, keep in mind that you need cell service for Google maps to work. You can download maps (about 30 miles x 30 miles is the limit) while you have cell service for later use. This video goes through the process pretty quickly...

You can add a label that will appear on the map. With your location open, tap the three dots at the top right corner of the screen.

Do a search for chartplotter apps on the play store. I have used Marine Navigation Lite and Marine Charts Lite. They let you set way points.

For offline navigation (no cell or wifi) I use Map.me and download state maps with navigation. Works with GPS. Not sure about on water use.
