The Heimlich self rescue

This was two months ago. I was eating a carrot. My dog wanted some. I gave him a piece and he held it like a cigar and walked around before eating it. I laughed at him. It happened. Phoop! I felt a piece of carrot suck into a place it shouldn't go. At first I coughed. Then even my coughing seemed restricted. Typical behavior; I moved away from my wife. She was about to heimlich me, but strangely I got calm. I positioned myself to push into the kitchen counter. I found that I still inhale a tiny bit if I breathed in super slowly. So I sloooowly filled my lungs. I could feel the air going around the obstruction. It was the oddest sensation. I then "huffed" out really hard. Real hard. I tiny piece of carrot went shooting.

It was scary. Yesterday I ate a raw carrot again for the first time. None for the dog.

Figured this could be a pre thanksgiving feast safety talk. All that talking and laughing. Be careful.

Ive always wondered if I could pull off a self heimlich thingee. I have always been afraid I would tense my abdomen up when doing it and my last bit of air in the lungs wouldn't be enough to expel whatever was in my airway.

When you hit the counter, did you do it fast? - like knocking the wind out of yourself? did the carrot fly out? did you aim for the counter right below the ribs or lower like a belly button level?

And why didn't you post about this two months ago?

How long after the carrot left were you able to take a full breath?

Mentioned this before but I can overeat and then lay at an odd angle and stomach acids get into my throat. I now walk to the sink and use my hand as a cup and take a few small gulps of water. Still takes 30+ seconds to get a decent breath.

It is scary. Good you stayed calm.
