In an average month, I use about 20 talk minutes, send/receive about 30 text messages, and use 1 mb of data.

I have lunch daily with several people I'd describe as "insecure". They can tolerate about 20 minutes of conversation before turning to their phones. When they do, I get up and leave.

Geezer voice: Why back in my day at Thanksgiving all the cousins all played in the back room with Lincoln logs and blocks and and imagination, and we were happy to have that! Geezer voice off

Different experience for me last Thursday...large family gathering (60-70), with oodles of younger relatives. Some serious brain power, athletes in the mix too ;). Over a four hour period, I saw exactly one cell phone pulled out...to confirm what Turkey tracks looked like...seriously! Everyone was outside, tossing a football, tumbling, etc. So there IS hope.

I was tied to a pager/bag phone then cell phone 24x7x365 for most of my corporate career, though I didn't actually get called THAT much. If you need to reach me now...I'll eventually get back to ya...might be a few hours though SmileWavy

Yes.

It also usually means they're socially inept

Being able to have a meaningful face to face conversation is becoming a "value added" or "competitve advantage" to hiring authorities. Mobile devices are removing people from reality and quickly diminishing their interpersonal skills.

The again, these are also the people putting themselves in 6-figure college debt for a $40k/yr job and demanding that student laons are too expensive... Yea, they're on another planet.

I got a smart phone in August - my girlfriend gave me her iPhone 4 when she replaced it with a 5. I'd been using the same Samsung flip phone for about 12 years (actually, I still haven't given it up) - it's a piece of crap, but I kind of like the thing. Obviously. I was tired of traveling and not having a usable phone overseas, and I wanted to get the iPhone into service before a trip to Yurrup. I was surprised at how easily one can get lured into certain habits - I saw them creeping in after about a week. I am at least an order of magnitude away, in terms of behavior, from typical millennial habits, but I can see how it happens if you grow up with it. Nonetheless, my girlfriend teases me about 'Pocket Precious' (iPad is 'Precious')

I type at 38 WPM on my phone. At this point it's easier and faster than a computer.

Fortunately I have the cheapest Samsung galaxy you can buy so I just text, call, and on the rare occasion check traffic or game scores or other non essentials...

I do my shopping and web browsing on my computer... just can't handle the tiny screen or trying to type on that same tiny screen.

Ticks me off when we are driving through beautiful country and my wife is glued to her phone... or when we go somewhere (like the strawberry festival) and everyone is looking at their phone instead of enjoying the day.

Back when I still had a corporate gig, I lost my personal cell....didn't phase me one bit and my g/f just couldn't comprehend....oh...it'll show up eventually or not ;)

Older Marine in my neighborhood found it in his old Mercedes he'd purchased that I was checking out after a week or so and called someone on my contact list to determine who it belonged to. Didn't have a land line at home by then either...What a NICE week it was SmileWavy

Oh yeah, my phone is DUMB...

I am a geek from the days of the Commodore Vic-16 and a cassette tape drive. I knew right away the 4K was not enough RAM so I bought the expansion memory and had 16K of RAM!

I resisted a smart phone for a long time. My 80 year old dad had a iPhone 1 and upgraded it to a 3G and gave me the old iPhone. I figured I would use it as a music player and toy only. I tasted the Kool-Aid and it was good. Shortly after I got it I had it activated and used it for a while. Now I have a 128 Gig Iphone 6S. I often go the entire day without using it. I know I have not used it at all when I go to turn off the home alarm system with my Iphone and the only message on it is that I activated the alarm that morning.

I lived without a call phone for over 50 years. I really can't imagine going back to no smart phone. I am certainly not addicted and could manage without it again. It is just so handy to have a dang nice camera, GPS, Internet access, music playback, email, calculator and much more device that will even make a phone call with me at all times.

I was a communications systems programmer and drove 10 million $ mainframes and high end networking gear (near a million each) for a living. Started my career in microcode development at RTP on processors similar to my Carrera and I can live in the binary world just fine too :D. My laptop locked up a few months ago, and if it weren't for some VERY cool trail cam videos on it, I'd probably just toss it and forget it...maybe I'll fix it, maybe I won't...it's old too :D. Typing this from an IPad I bought my mom several years that she never uses....

I "might" replace my laptop with a smart phone...maybe...if this POS IPad ever croaks, so maybe I'll join ya some day Glen SmileWavy

Hey Bob....finally got around to viewing your video. Very powerful and absolutely spot on!

I love the part at 1:46....her rolled eyes expression is hilarious...and kind of sad at the same time.

Here is the embed for anyone else interested.....5 minutes that could preempt 1,000 times that.....or more.....
