Can someone identify this Salvador Dali work?
Last week someone identified my mystery rifle magazine in five minutes. A few days ago it was a mystery squash indentified in five minutes. How about this...
![]() Work is embossed... it's framed with glass on the front and back: ![]() It's also signed front and back. #101 of 300 ![]()

Good luck. I have read that he is one of the most counterfeited artists. He even helped:
" In 1965 he began selling signed sheets of otherwise blank lithograph paper for $10 a sheet. He may have signed well over 50,000 in the remaining quarter century of his life, an action that resulted in a flood of Dalí lithograph forgeries." from Smithsonian See also: salvadordalifakes.com Ian

![]() Very similar to the one I posted, but doesn't appear to be embossed.

Looks like two versions of the same thing to me.

I agree. Not sure what to make of not being able to find any history on this. I guess it's a good thing. If there were dozens of them on Ebay I'd say someone was cranking them out. I haven't been able to find any details on this particular piece anywhere.
I'm thinking that the fact that it's embossed lessens the chance that it's a fake. Still wish I could find some background info.

This is really tough.
I have eight Dali lithographs that I bought from reliable sources. Since buying these (during the course of the past 25 years) I have kept an eye out for similar pieces and have found far too many of them, and have of course started to ask all kinds of questions. I am traveling for a few days, but when I return on the weekend, I'll post some photographs with some indications of what to look for. I will say this, I have looked at hundreds and hundreds of these lithographs and I have never seen an "embossed" one. That doesn't mean it ain't real, but I'm just saying...

And the answer is...
Artist: Salvador Dali Title: L'Hostie (from L'Apocalypse illustrations) Size: 22.5" x 29" Signed: Dali in pencil on front and verso Medium: Original Intaglio Notations: Image has embossing which reflects a ghost image on verso.

Hi,
I think the litho you were inquiring about 2 years ago, has been presented to me for sale, it is framed exactly the same way. Could you please tell me something more about the provenance? Looking forward to your answer. |
