Start doing Yoga regularly to strengthen your core. Stretch your hamstrings fully every morning after a hot shower, hold each pose a minimum of 30 seconds. I have annual bouts with my lower back from working on those damn sports cars out in the garage. Just coming out of a minor back tweak from wrenching on my son's 1992 Miata on Thanksgiving. DP

Doc gave me Vicodin and a muscle relaxant which I took 2.5 hours ago. Still no relief though. My instructions are to report back on Monday if pain doesn't subside.

The pharmacist did say constipation is a side effect of Vicodin. That's never been a problem for me but I will definitely take your advice. I sure hope the meds work soon. If not, I'll ask for Oxycodone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Yoga was also advised by my doc. I'll look into it.

I did Pilates as part of a core strengthening program that really helped with my back problems. You'll definitely want to start out with low impact and build up in whatever you do. I've found that if I keep up with my core exercises I don't have back pain. I hope you get the kinks worked out. If you're having 7 to 8 pain I'd consider having some Xrays to make sure you didn't do some damage.
Hope the pain subsides. It sucks having your back tweaked, I messed mine up about 9 years ago and I wish I could go back and not do what I did to mess it up. |
i didn't read through every post to see if it was mentioned, but my go-to position when my back goes out is the 90-90, where both my hips and knees are bent 90 degrees. I lie on the floor on my back, perpendicular to the coffee table, resting my calves on the table. Like sitting on a chair except your back is on the floor. This is the only comfortable position I've found for myself in that situation. Been there, and it's not fun. At all.
Hope you're on the mend! |
+1 for a chiropractor. I swear by them.

If you get oxy, be sure to crush one and . . . well, maybe not.

Unfortunately there's not a whole lot you can do at this point beyond pain relievers. Going forward you need to prevent them or your likely to have a reoccurrence. Prior to grappling I would throw out my back every year like clockwork and end up stuck in a fetal position for 3 days. You have to stretch... period or it will happen again. Stretching on a regular basis is the most important thing you can do to prevent this from happening again.

Hydrocodone loops me out but does nothing to my pain. Oxy leaves me completely lucid but kills my pain pretty well. Go figure.
Be careful with the yoga. Some of the "instructors" have less-than-intelligent ideas about what the human body is supposed to be able to do. I have a coworker who was progressively screwing his back up worse and worse by following his yoga teacher's advice. Frankly I recommend seeing a physical therapist or a chiropractor (someone who actually studied anatomy) and having them show you what exercises/stretches to do. This is, of course, after you see a doctor and make sure it's nothing worse than angry musculature. |
