Interesting traffic incident

I was in traffic today, and witnessed one vehicle scrape against another while trying to get around it. The 'victim' driver appears to have a short conversation with the transgressor, and the scraper vehicle pulled in behind the scrapee, who then turned into the next parking lot... and then the scrape-er bailed. I was on my way to a Dr appt and given the minor nature of the ordeal, didn't feel like tracking down either party. I did capture the whole thing on my dash cam, though.

Judging by the looks the the scrape-er's van, this isn't his first rodeo.

Not sure what - if anything - I should do at this point. I'm sure the scrape-ee would live to get his hands on this video.

Turn in the scraper, then go into witness protection.

I would have stopped and chatted with the scrapee. Exchanged contact info so they (scrapee/insurance co) could get ahold of that video later, when it's more convenient for you to do so.

Call the local po-po and see if a report was filed?
Sargent will add to his file.
You have the plate and video. Scrape-ee can ID the driver. Should be enough for a prosecutor.

Saw a few hit-n-runs while living in SF. Ticks me off.

I thought in Cali you were required to stop and give witness info?

I would see if I could get the name of the scrapee via the license number. Would the police or dmv give that out? If not take the vid the police and let them find him. There could be negative insurance implications for the scrapee.

My guess is the driver of the van that was scraped likely got the license number of the scraper, either at the light, or while catching up to him during the traffic flow--they were sitting there for a good 30 seconds waiting for the signal to change. You can see the scrapee move his van up during that 30 second wait. He was probably trying to clear the lane his ass-end was blocking, but he was close enough to read and record the license number.

Bottom line, I don't think your video would be critical to this situation though the scrapee would certainly like to have it, I'm sure. It's hard to tell how much damage, if any, was done to the scrapee that would warrant an insurance claim. The video doesn't show the scrapee's van being jolted or moved by contact and the part that may have made have contact appears to be the tip of the bumper. It looks like the scraper's van would have got the worst of any contact. Unless you witnessed/heard something that doesn't show on the video, the incident appears to be a very minor paint scrape on the victim's bumper that the insurance would not even cover due to the deductible. One could even argue, from the video alone, that the scraper didn't even realize he hit the other van, and it's not clear that there was a conversation between the two as they moved down the road.

Turn it over to the po po. It could only help the victim and maybe nail the ass hole.

I can't believe it.

You drove right by Hooters and did not stop for lunch.

Actually, if someone hits you and does minor damage, it is on their insurance to fix it, even if it is just paint scraped down to bare plastic.

Maybe the scrapeee should learn to properly get in the lane and they wouldn't have to worry about crap like this....

I live in Florida too. But I'm a native Californian. Trust me.....California has it's share of crappy drivers and crazy people so I wouldn't talk if I were you.

Getting back to the video....what Bell said....dumbass scrapee left his ass hanging out in the left hand lane.

It's California...what do you expect!

My entire life from childhood on has been here, so not native but close enough. Yeah, California has its share of crappy drivers for sure, but to pin blame on the guy stopped in traffic instead of the guy driving is silly. Unless you think it's okay for the moving car to hit whatever's in his lane because it happens to be in his lane.

In that area, it is not at all clear where you are going to need to be to get where you need to go, if that makes sense. The streets are not particularly well labeled. Also, at any given time, it can be a bit of a nightmare, traffic wise.

IMO, the scraper is a loser and a douche, and the scrapee is a lazy/crappy driver that shares in some very minor part of this incident but not much maybe 5 or 10% for being a lazy and not getting out of the friggin' way.

No one is pinning the blame on the scrapee. That is not what Bell and I said. Bell and my comments stated if he didn't leave his ass hanging out - he wouldn't have had any exposure.....and in this particular situation - that is a fact.

Obviously the scraper was at fault but the scrapee didn't help himself either.

I had to bust you on the Florida comment - that's on you, Amail.

Cheers!
