Wordpress question
Any wordpress guru's out there?
I'd like to create a child theme as described here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes I'm hung up on the first step. Is the wp-content/themes folder they're talking about in my local machine, or to be found via the control panel of my domain / host? Thx in advance. |
I'm no WP guru, but I've been pretty active recently trying to set something up the way I want it.
They're talking about your control panel for your domain / host. Use the File Manager (that's what it's called in iPage.com) |

Whether we are talking about your local or server folder really depends on your workflow. Do you do all your work locally then move to the live production server (good) or do you do all your work in the live environment (risky)? Either way, ultimately the child theme does need to reside on the production server. Your hosting provided control panel should have a file manager which is what I'm assuming you are referring to. I would suggest grabbing an FTP client for file management. Filezilla is free and platform agnostic. Not the prettiest UI out there but it works just like it should. https://filezilla-project.org/ |
Many thanks. On their server - duh. How else would it know what to tell my site to do.... My service does all editing / theme changes, etc on their end via a "Dashboard". It has preview capabilities and easily switches back to prior version, so the risk is minimized. It also saves theme information, so when switching back to the parent theme all the settings are there. It's also possible to back up to my machine and re-load if it all goes sideways... which I've done...
